If you look back at Ramprakash and Hick's era they were constantly under pressure to score runs, otherwise they knew they were going to be dropped by the selectors. That approach doesn't really allow you to play your shots or your natural game. Back then the selection process was flawed, too much chopping and changing which didn't allow continuity and England suffered for it. |
It would have been interesting in Hick's case had he qualified through residency a year earlier. Easing himself in against what were quite tame Indian and NZ attacks were a world away from Ambrose and co. when he did. He did have a bit of a fish out of water look about him. From memory, Ramprakash would often get starts and get out between 20 and 40 odd.

Hick had so much pressure on him, he scored a hatful of runs in the county game and had that mantle he was going to be England's batting messiah once he qualified. That 170 odd against India, in India showed his class, but I just wanted him to do it consistently for England. He averaged 31 in tests. Ramprakash I remember always watching and willing him through those 20s, but more often than not he'd get himself out, even though he had looked so composed. When he scored that 100 in the WI, you thought hear we go this is lift off for him, but once again it was not to be. Test average 27. Perhaps it was a mental battle for both of them, they certainly had the ability. [Post edited 30 Jan 2021 15:09]

James Vince on 13:23 - Jan 30 by Chrisd | If Mark Ramprakash was playing now for England he'd be far better managed than he was back then. Same with Graeme Hick. [Post edited 30 Jan 2021 13:27]

Best contrived cricket diary book title from Hick and Graham Dilley "Hick 'n' Dilley Circus"

James Vince on 12:34 - Jan 30 by gainsboroughblue | That made me think of the time Alex Tudor was stranded on 99 not out when batting with Graham Thorpe. |
I remember that to this day as I was in the crowd. Few choice words towards Mr. Thorpe for not holding up his end to let Tudor get 100..

I remember the crowd backlash for that one. I think Thorpe hit a four with five needed or something. Not sure if Tudor had said to him 'I'm not fussed about the century, just get the runs' or something. Atherton declaring with Hick on 98* in Melbourne (?) was savage but he did get given plenty of time to get it.

James Vince on 12:52 - Jan 30 by Chrisd | England's depth now is ridiculously good, not ITFC good, but 'proper' good. |
A South African, possibly Pollock, was saying that in the games there recently. He reckoned that there were players not near England’s squad that would walk into SAs and others’ teams.
