The wage cap. 23:03 - Feb 3 with 1239 views | MattinLondon | I know that this is a silly question...But do footballers have to be employed by the club they represent? Can future signings have their wages paid by another one of Marcus Evans companies? Officially their wages won’t be on the clubs payroll? So won’t be subject to the wage cap.

But this doesn't mean that one of ME's companies couldn't 'sponsor' a player, hire as an ambassador etc. I know it has happened elsewhere, just isn't spoken about. There are rules to prevent this, but it's a grey area and is possible to sneak through.

Derby already did with Rooney's wages didn't they? I'm sure some betting company subsidised his wages. [Post edited 4 Feb 2021 10:49]

Interesting speculation, would it also be possible for one of Evans's other companies to 'sponsor' a whole team of players? Say Lincoln or Hull city, purely as an unsubstantiated and idle idea of course... And then another one of his companies, again please remember that this is all idle speculation, could sort of 'sponsor' owner ship of other teams, say L...OK, I'll stop there.

They have, but I'd be surprised if they are paying him directly. It could be that they have just increased sponsorship to the value of his wages. Not that I know of course, but when did that ever stop anyone posting!
