Pointless loan signings 15:02 - Mar 6 with 2185 viewstractordownsouth

Is there another club that has had as many pointless loans as us over the past few years. By that, I mean players who play a handful of games and then completely disappear from the picture, rather than those who are just cr@p. Just in the post-Mick era we've had loads

Tayo Edun, Jordan Graham, Callum Elder, Anthony Georgiou, Josh Earl, Luke Thomas.

And that's before you get into the pointless permanent signings like Simon Dawkins. Just p1ss poor recrutiment.

Forget those ones and look at the current ones.

Will McGuinness ever play for us again and what has he achieved for us except prevent our own players from playing?

Harrop, Bennetts and Thomas seem no better than what we have.

Parrott, as skilful as he is, isn't going to give what we need in terms of goals.

Matheson will probably play and give us something down the flank unless KVY gets fit.

Yes, it has been a failing for too long now as well.

Out of the six with us, should any really be here? Couldn’t we cover the gaps with our own players and would they have been any worse?

Matheson - Donacien
McGuinness - Ndaba
Harrop - Lankester
Bennetts - Dobra
Thomas - El Mizouni
Parrott - ok, might just accept this one! Maybe Simpson?

Couldn’t agree more. I hope Cook goes forward without loanees except perhaps one a season who is a potential “game changer” as Fraser and Lawrence were. Concentrate on coaching and developing our own players.

I don't mind loaning other youngsters that are a step up on what we have and then loaning our own players to the lower leagues for development (Like when we signed Pennington, which enabled us to give Woolfenden a season in L2 with Swindon) but we've signed a bunch of average wingers/attacking midfielders while the likes of Dobra and Lankester are kicking their heels in the U23 squad.

It's just poor squad management - Matheson and Parrott came in on deadline day and while they're both a step up in quality and play in areas where we're short, most of us were questioning why we were bringing in our 5th and 6th loan signing.

I'd send Thomas and Harrop back tomorrow, I really don't see what they offer.

Yep - having 2 (or even 3 at a push) is fine, but 6 is a joke. When managers need to rely on 6 loans, it's clear they're out of ideas.

Not sure a new gaffer should be doing much with loans unless they are absolutely necessary or nailed on to sign for us at the end of the season.

If you have to one or two loans can add something to a squad, but if we are building for the future it is counter productive.

I've always said loanees should be either when desperate to cover a position or if it genuinely improves a team. Gio. Fraser. Lawrence. Etc

Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

It's bizarre that we've basically got 4 attacking midfielders on loan now (given where Parrot is playing), and we already had Judge, Edwards, Bishop, Lankester, Dobra and El Mizouni able to play in those positions.

TheRealist, you disagree.

Care to tell me which of those is better than what we have or how Parrott is going to solve our goal scoring problems?

Depends how much resources he has. If Evan's stays we are screwed. Evan's loves loans. Short deals - no large long-term commitments.

Cook is clearly interested in trying to make the play-offs & to do that he should use the best players available, even if they're loans. If they play offs become unattainable then yes, stop playing all the loan players & try to build for next season.
Lambert being allowed to pack the squad with 6 loan players after he'd said this was exactly what he wouldn't do when he got the job was the final straw for me as far as his reign was concerned.

I'm not sure any of this season's loans have improved us at all. I think there's logic in Parrott and Matheson being here given we've been light at right back and up front, but Matheson can't even get in ahead of Chambers at the minute and Parrott has rather flattered to deceive. The others just don't seem to be very good and all they're doing is cock blocking our own young players, who they don't seem to be any better than.

Parrott looked excellent in his debut but after that, yes, very little. He's now played 20 senior games without scoring a goal, which I would guess has affected his confidence.
At right back, we had Chambers, Donacien & Woolfenden, all of whom can play RB so even with KVY out we had plenty of cover.
Again, bringing in a raft of loan players in the window was always likely to be more disruptive than it was worth as they tried to fit into the team.

Chambers and Woolfenden aren't right backs. Agree that Donacien is capable enough there but after he'd gone we needed some cover there. The likes of Bennetts and Harrop though, just really struggling to see what they offer, and McGuiness just created a whole heap of problems.

Although I agree Chambers isn't a right back, he has spent much of his Town career there & don't really get the point of replacing him with an 18 year old loan player. Woolfenden is plenty mobile enough to play there, has played there in the past & is likely to be better there than Chambers (and is our player).
Neither Bennetts, Harrop or Thomas seem better than players we already have.
I think McGuinness has been the best of our loan players, but whether playing him there instead of our own players is a good idea is a fair question.

McGuiness hasn't been very good. Too error prone and seems to have hampered Woolf's progress. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on the relative merits of having a specialist full back at right back rather than moving a CB there.

What on Earth has happened to Barry Cotter? Got his debut under Mick and played well but has disappeared since.

Parrott is a classic Ipswich signing. Struggling to score goals so let's sign a striker that's never scored a professional goal at club level.

Cotter made a promising Town debut, but that was nearly 3 years ago. Has hardly played for Town's first team since. Apparently struggled to hold down a place at 6th tier Chelmsford and now at age 22 he'll no doubt be looking for another career.
