Size of Ball: Fixed in 1872.
Shinguards: Introduced & registered by Sam Weller Widdosown ( Nottingham Forest & England) in 1874.

First Soccer closed- circuit TV : At Coventry ground in October 1965( 10,000 fans saw their team win at Cardiff).
Substitutes: (one per team) were first allowed in Football League matches at the start of season 1965-66. Three substitutes ( one a goalkeeper) allowed, two which could be used ,in Premier League matches, 1992-93. The Football League introduced three substitutes for 1993-94.
Three points for a win: introduced by the Football League in 1981-82, by FIFA in World Cup games in 1994.
Offside law ammend: player 'level' no longer offside, and ' professional foul', made sending-off offence, 1990.
Penalty shoot-outs; introduced to decide FA Cup ties level after one replay and extra time, 1992.
New back-pass rule: goalkeeper must not handle ball kicked to him by a team-mate, 1992.
Linesman: became 'referees' assistants, 1998.
Goalkeepers: not to hold ball longer than six seconds, 2000
Free-kicks: advanced by ten yards against opponents failing to retreat,2000. This experimental rule in England was scrapped in 2005.

Considering there have been the biggest advances in player fitness and equipment over the last half-century it's incredible how little has been done to change rules and retain the essence of the game.
They've allowed the game itself to change which is fine but I think there's a lot they could do to make the top level games less attritional and space so difficult to find. It can be a fascinating struggle when your own team is involved (or the very best players are involved) but I find the remaining 95% of elite football remarkably boring.
And yes, I know that's an age thing as well. [Post edited 17 Jul 2020 13:01]

Correct. Two substitutes per team were approved for the league (Littlewoods) Cup & FA Cup in season 86-87 and two were permitted in the Football League for the first time in 87-88 season. | | | |
