I would kind of like a world cup every two years, though not at the risk of losing the Euro competition - I am sure the players would not be too pleased only having one summer off every 4 years.

Add in all the extra qualifiers and the schedules become immensely crowded.

May end up with a situation like cricket where players from the national squad have to be kept on retainer and rarely appear for their counties. Or, more likely, we have to field inferior England teams as the clubs refuse to release their men for international duty. Especially if Infantino continues to ramp up his Club World Cup project as well.

What the footballing authorities don't seem to grasp is that the more football there is the less value and regard it has.

Exactly, the reason the WC, EC and other occasions, like the Olympics, are special is because they occur every 4 years.

I wouldn't be averse to there being proper Club World and European Championships played every 4 years in the years between them.

Infantino is quoted as saying:-
Are we really convinced that playing qualifying games [across the year] is the right way when we are saying that fans want more meaningful games?

Surely by being for qualification to a major tournament they are by definition meaningful?

Or is he saying, the big boys don't like the jeopardy of WC qualification, cos they lose or draw occasionally with annoying minnows meaning they lose out, and they want to auto qualify freeing them up to play money spinning friendlies* against each other

*a.k.a. meaningless

Remember when Greece and Turkey were regular whipping boys in European football?
Remember when Robson's England stuffed Turkey 8-0?
Greece have won Euros, we haven't
Turkey aren't likely to be turned over by us in that style again anytime soon.

Leave it alone, it's special organically, doesn't need tweaking.

What he means is ‘we have diluted qualification to the point where many of the games are meaningless so people are losing interest’ which is exactly what will happen if they increase the frequency of ‘big tournaments’.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Exactly.

The only reason FIFA and UEFA were against the Super League was because they didn’t get there first.

Love a world cup but part of what makes it special is the fact it's rare.

TBF, what has been omitted from this article (and is a fairly important bit of context) is that this was suggested by member associations, not FIFA themselves. There was a vote at the FIFA congress on looking at the proposal (from Saudi Arabia) and 166 associations were in favour and just 22 against.

It probably seems mad to us because the Euros are a high-profile tournament. However, not all continental competitions are regarded quite so highly (especially the Asian one) so it's not really a surprise that countries elsewhere might be in favour. Plus for smaller countries, it gives them more chance of qualifying.
