That Bolton second leg. Here's Jim Magilton talking about that game and more play-off stuff last year over five pages (plus three further multi-part pieces on other aspects of his time here).

was a real coming of age sort of game for that group.

They have been accused of being chokers and being able to be bullied, but they stood up to both elements that night, perhaps even from the 2nd goal in the first leg, was when it really kicked in

I'd have given anything to have been there, that night.

I couldn't get there. Don't think it was even on Radio 5. So I watched it on Ceefax !!!

We had a whole ceefax page to ourselves.

Id virtually given up looking at it when we were 3-2 down in injury time.

The joy when I looked one last time and it said 3-3.

They certainly did stand up that night. It was an extraordinary, electric evening in every way. I never heard the ground louder than that before or since, regardless of crowd size.

We could be bullied a bit at times, which is why Bolton played the way they did, but that side of Burley’s was stylish and flippin good.

What I loved about that game is how Stewart describes it as the most physical game to be involved in
You didnt need to be a player to feel the physicality of the game. You felt every tackle. Every hostile moment as a fan watching you became one of the players.
Every time dean holdsworth got tackled you felt the pleasure of it being made lol.

Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

its was also the UEFA cup final that night with Arsenal so there was no chance Radio 5 were going to cover us.

It was a special night under the lights.

Made all the better because of the previous failures in the years before.

I remember thinking when Johnston scored that goal that we were destined not to win again. If I recall correctly before Magilton’a 3rd the crowd had gone very quiet thinking we had blown it. Then After Magilton’s 3rd the place was rocking.

Something that is forgotten was the year before v Bolton was also a very good game that we were on the wrong end of.

The best, bar none, I cannot imagine I will ever see a game as good, let alone in person.

The only Muff in Town.
