Let's ignore the squad balance and look at formations 12:40 - Jul 29 with 1288 viewsBluefish

What have we learned from the "free hit" last season and the pre season campaign about how Cookie wants us to play and our preferred shape?

He's bought in players that can play in a 4231 or 442 formation. I believe the preference is the former.

1-24 Predictions competition by tractordownsouth 28 Jul 2021 15:21
I posted a thread the other day for posters to predict the League One table but have decided to make it into a competition. Here are the rules:

Each poster must predict the table 1-24. At the end of the season you will score points based on how far away you were from each team's league finish.

For example if you were to predict Town to finish 2nd and we finish 2nd then you would score 0 points. If we finish bottom of the league you would get 22 points.

Your scores for every team in the league are then added up. The aim is to finish on as few points as possible. In the unlikely event that more than one entrant is tied for points, the winner will be decided by who has the highest number of teams predicted in exactly the right place in the table.

There won't be any late counting of results this year as Kropotkin and his friend Google Spreadsheets have kindly offered to assist. No entry fees but there may be a prize on offer. Entries can be posted and edited up until 3pm on 7th August (Town's first game) if Phil would be so kind as to sticky it. Good luck!

Certainly feels like this season will only be measured by how close to top spot we are.

Think his preference is still going to be 4-2-3-1 and the AM players he has brought in do seem to indicate that.

Whats better is the versatility he's brought in, Chaplin and Bonne can play anywhere along a front three and Fraser has that in his locker too.

It looks to me as though he has brought in personnel that can operate in either formation, I think we'll probably start on the 7th as a 4-2-3-1 but may switch to 4-4-2 as the game progresses. Could be we start games against tougher opposition as a 4-4--2.

The key thing will be developing play to break down sides setting up for a draw, something we lacked badly last season.

Also where does Burns fit into that? He seems a nailed on starter and too good to be at RB (plus he hasn't been there in pre season). How would he fit in? It also closes the door for Dobra a bit? I wonder if wingbacks and 3 cbs are an option? PC hasn't really used them yet so would seem strange but perhaps he needed Edmundson in first

Is it promotion or the sack for Cook this season? by homer_123 13 Jul 2021 20:37
What's the concensus?

Our new owners have made it clear they want out of this division and the signs are Cook is being backed in the transfer market, which is great.

But...do we think Cook will last if things don't happen on the pitch?

Just wondering what people think will happen.

I think PC rates Dobra, just wants to see him have more end product. I could see him being used a lot like Grealish was at the Would Cup this season.

I think he is considered AMR/FWR, but can drop back into RB, with someone like Dobra coming in ahead of him in that AMR/FWR position. It seems like a deliberate policy to bring in players that are comfortable on the ball, energetic and can play in a couple of positions. Burns really highlights that.

532 would be an option, as we do have the box-to-box midfielders to play that. But we would be sacrificing a lot of talent going forward and I think we'd probably need someone like Coulson to come in to be effective enough with the wingbacks. Also in that system you lose one of Burns or KVY, which seems to be a bit neglectful. The other thing is are they training to play that formation? I think at this level play two formations that are quite similar is better. At least whilst we are still getting players to gel as a team.

Cook is a 4-2-3-1 man. He’ll play that but the interesting thing to note will be if the number 10 is (to over simplify) a midfielder (like Fraser or Magilton) or a forward (like Pigott or Scowcroft). I wonder if this might change depending on opposition.

So PC said in the forum that 4231 is definitely his preferred formation. But we will need to be flexible in some games to take the game to them. He said in that instance it would be a two up top (assuming 442, as that offers the flexibility) so we can have more people in the box when we are putting a lot of crosses in against more stubborn teams.

Good news our refusal to adapt was costing us badly in this league.

I was talking to someone the other day about the fact we've spent the past couple of season obsessively trying to work the ball into the best crossing position and then realising tondo that meant we had no one in the box
