Have to admit, I never thought, overall, HS2 was a particularly good idea, or use of resources. However, the bits which are being cut or reduced - including the cross-Pennine routes - are some of those most urgently needed. Plus, having created all these ructions, we're now going to be left with a rump scheme whic doesn't really satisfy any of the needs, just makes it quicker to get from London to Birmingham (not convinced the Crewe and Manchester sections will ever go ahead, either).

A better rail network in the north would have been far better (and cheaper), imo. The London-Birmingham, London-Manchester services are already fast enough without HS2. A comprehensive overhaul of the entire rail network to high-speed electric would also be very welcome but that would mean the Tories not playing the pork barrel politics game.

It was always the case that the bits away from London to Birmingham were the most crucial and value add sections of HS2. It was always going to be the case that these never went ahead.

Working in construction i'm always convinced that the industry has to always have at least one major scheme happening to keep it going full tilt. Henceforth Channel Tunnel, Heathrow extensions, Olympics, cross rail (whenever it finally opens), HS2 etc (Boris' London Airport island...) Never saw the benefit particularly in HS2 for the money and destruction it causes.

Not sure how many people in the North, or Midlands really wanted HS2. Would prefer increased investment on local services, or between major cities in their area. Trans-pennine services are supposedly increasing capacity three fold which seems more important than getting to and from London quicker.

Putting a new rail line in allows for the capacity of existing services to increase - because local trains are not then competing with fast commuter trains for track access - so HS2 was badly miss-sold to the public from the off. It shouldn't have been mainly about speed. I agree that the rail infrastructure outside of main lines to London is largely poor and needs increased spending (and for it to actually happen not be cancelled like the East Midlands electrification) but bits of high speed line with gaps after them are a total mess. Another half-arsed saving from Sunak's arse.

France ...big empty country with population based mainly in towns and cities Spain....big empty country with population based mainly in towns and cities Both ideal for HS trains England....small country denesley populated with a myriad of small, medium and large towns...some cities, some huge conurbations Not so ideal for HS trains Also, I suspect most rail users want frequent reliable trains, not a few prestige expresses every 3 hours
NEW! Fun-size HS2 on 15:34 - Nov 18 with 503 views | Darth_Koont | File with “Northern Powerhouse”, “Levelling up” and any other claim of regenerative, redistributive policies. Ultimately, it’s all empty guff and there’s actually next to zero political will for any of this. It’s the illusion of doing something that counts.

HS2 could have been a good way of combatting regional inequalities but it's really not done it. There's nothing for the South West and because transport isn't fully devolved, Wales isn't getting anything either. These are two of the worst areas in the country - surely they could have been given some money to develop bus and train links while much of the North/Midlands is getting HS2.
