They're no better at a local level, look at the dreadful behaviour of certain local councillors this week. They even use fake profiles to post their abhorrent views on the Star's Facebook page but don't seem to realise how easy they are to spot, their fake names have even been outed elsewhere. |  | |  |

The report in the OP addresses that point. Also asylum seekers are entitled to seek refuge in any country they choose and are not obliged to seek it in the first country they enter.
Brexit has actually made it harder to return those coming from France, as was pointed out before the referendum but apparently that was Project Fear.
I dread to think what would happen to the likes of Farage/Fisher/Francois if the French get so fed up with the UKs treaty breaking that they decide to do the same and rescind the Le Touquet agreement. Which is a bilateral agreement not a UK-EU one so the French can do that any time they wish. [Post edited 20 Nov 2021 21:58]

They don't. Most settle in other European countries https://www.unhcr.org/uk/asylum-in-the-uk.html. Reasons why those who come here want to come here pretty broad, from having family here, friends who've come here, perceived economic opportunities, language, etc. And those being smuggled/trafficked often don't have any choice - they go where they are taken/told. | |

Because the family send a man who will have the opportunity to earn the most, using what resources they can to pay the smugglers to take him to somewhere more prosperous. That chap will then, it is hoped, send money back to the family.

Still a small percentage of the total. There are various reasons why some want to settle in the UK. Family, friends or contacts already there and speaking English are the 2 obvious ones. You might ask why so many more want to go to Germany. | |

It's really straightforward. Many of them will have learned some English, not many of them will have learned Flemish, or German for that matter.
It's the flipside of British people being able to travel the world and "expect" that taxi drivers and waiters understand them if they speak Emgliah.
Similarly, many Algerians, Tunisian and Moroccans seek to emigrate to France, because, as former French colonies, their education systems teach French. | | | |
