If they already didn't, he and most of his colleagues wouldn't be MPs.

I disagree. At best he's pushing the "freedom of speech" defence to its limit. At worst, he's trying to pre-emptively defend those who would be committing hate/discrimination crimes under the protection of parliamentary privilege.

If we are seeking to steer society away from institutional racism, sexism, etc., then our elected leaders have to be the ones setting an example.

I havent read that but I do think its better when the public neutralises hatred and bigotry rather than the state setting parameters around what it perceives as acceptable.

When the state gets involved then I start to get 1984 connotations.

I agree. Given the constraints of our 'democracy' anyway, this doesn't feel like it's tipping us into the Politburo any time soon.

people standing for election are subject to the law and should be prosecuted if they breach, for example, the racial and religious hatred act. that's entirely straightforward. there is no parliamentary privilege during elections - no one standing is then an mp.

but even when everyone is opposed to discrimination, there is a legitimate and contested debate about what constitutes discrimination in any particular situation. to go beyond what the law prohibits would be immensely political, and to impose those additional restrictions on people standing for election would be anti-democratic and a serious restriction on freedoms.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show
