I used to have time for the police but the kind of stuff that has come out in recent years is shameful. I know you can't blame a few rotten apples but in my view police vetting is wholly inadequate.
Unfortunately societal standards have slipped so low and i dislike the human race more and more. The standards have slipped into every bastion of live and i don't believe its a few rotten apples anymore. The police seem deep in unpleasant individuals. Yes there are many amazing individuals I'm sure but the proportion of scum in their ranks is far too large to be excusable.
(Apologies to any who work or have loved ones in the force - just how i feel these days - I'm quite glad i never pursued this as a career path as i very seriously considered when i was in my 20s.)

Vetting is one thing, but this is a lot bigger imho. It is the culture within policing that is problem, that they are institutionally corrupt.
Ask yourself why has this taken 9 years to come to an apology? How many Met officers will have viewed that footage and not at that point immediately held up their hands and recognised they got it badly wrong? Highlighted it was wrong and immediately taken the necessary steps to ensure her complaint was addressed at that time?
I would suggest in all likelyhood that would be dozens of officers over the years. Dozens of them content to go along with the Met's denials that anything was wrong when it is crystal clear an innocent woman was treated in the most disgusting manner for nothing other than giving someone a "card" detailing their rights.
That is corruption, that is cultural and it is institutional.
Why you feel the need to apologise to anyone who works within policing I have no idea. If I or a loved one worked with the police, I'd want all examples of misconduct highlighted and acted upon, as this lady has done.
That some police and their friends/family don't like that merely suggests that they too are part of the problem. Those who prefer others to cover up and/or ignore the truth about British policing rather than face the truth are part of the problem, irrespective of how uncomfortable that might be for them personally.

I just didn't want to tarnish the work and careers of some people who do very difficult and thankless jobs I guess. I mean we do need law and order and someone has to do it... and some will actively challenge this stuff. Things like this come out because some individuals with a moral compass become aware of things and refuse to stay silent or complicit.

But otherwise I agree with everything you say BL
I know you are on the right side here. But...
"Things like this come out because some individuals with a moral compass become aware of things and refuse to stay silent or complicit"
But it didn't come out did it? It only came out when the recordings came out which backed the lady's version of events. How many of those officers you think spoke out at the time? Or when she first complained?
And the reason they didn't is because of the culture of policing - to protect each other. In some ways it's understandable - they rely on each other in dangerous situations - but that doesn't make it acceptable.

I agree.
I'm not talking in this particular instance which is why it is shameful considering the dozens of other officers in that force who would have been aware. It's shocking - not just the incident itself.
But there are serving police officers that would bring things up like this if they were aware. I have first count testament to that.

Two paragraphs in and already it's stomach churning. These officers must have mothers, wives, girlfriends or daughters?
And even if they don't they should be sufficiently educated to know that they are officers of the law. Not Roy Chubby Brown.
Vile scum who should be disciplined/fired. I still don’t get how it goes from “I’m not giving you my name” to having your clothes cut off with scissors for a strip search. Even allowing for some guardian spin that doesn’t add up.

It should be the case that ALL officers "would bring things up like this if they were aware."
The balance is tipped too far in favour of the 'rotten apples'.
It is now a daily occurrence to read of a copper who has sexually assaulted, engaged in sex whilst on duty, shoplifted, attacked someone etc
How the hell are these unsuitables allowed to be recruited, never mind remain in the force ?

In 2018 Howard appeared before a disciplinary panel, which cleared him of gross misconduct. He argued the search was necessary to assess any risk Duff might pose to herself, and its chair concluded his actions were those of a responsible officer. The CCTV footage now obtained by Duff of the police station custody area on the day she was searched shows Howard telling officers to show her “resistance is futile” and to search her “by any means necessary”.
“Treat her like a terrorist,” he says. “I don’t care.”

A few bad apples, etc.
ACAB.
ACAB is so lazy and disrespectful, speaking as someone for whom a specific sergeant took a disliking to at PR for a few seasons I developed an intense dislike of them.
However from 90s often had to work alongside the police I found a different perspective. More recently I have regailed this site with youngest offspring's adventures with Met Police Volunteer Cadets and have come to know a few Met officers.
My final thoughts on the matter are;- A cop shop and it's team reflects the dominant sargeant Reading thru that, who the feck viewed / listened to the cctv and thought the behaviour acceptable to exonerate the sergeant? Treat others how you wish to be treated, it is that easy.
