Sanctions on a personal level. Will you boycott the Qatar world cup? on 11:43 - Apr 7 with 1278 views | MattinLondon | In the past, major sporting events have been held in countries with highly dubious regimes. Why is it that this World Cup is generating more publicity in terms of morality etc when, for example, the Olympics in China did not? I don’t want to start an argument but just interested in why some have strongly held views regarding Qatar. Also, if you are planning to boycott an event surly you’ll have to refuse to watch it in its entirety rather than depending on how well or bad England do?

Part of it is probably down to the corruption and bribery that resulted in Qatar being awarded the World Cup in the first place. I don’t know, but I’m not aware of the same being levelled at China for the Olympics. That and the complete upheaval to World Cup norms that this has caused, chiefly playing in the winter in a nation with no footballing heritage nor aptitude.

I don't like it being there, but when push comes to shove I will watch it - it isn't my fault that the sports administrators have chosen for it to be there - and FIFA has been overhauled since then. All those who picked it are out on there ear.

People who go to such things, and are now not - that sends a message. People not watching on TV won't do anything.

I'd like to say I could boycott it, and I'm still disgusted by the corruption etc. but it's hard to see how a boycott will work as the ad revenue etc will be handed over beforehand. Tickets are already selling well as will ad space so it seems hard to fight this particular tide.

Unless people are being surveyed, how will they know if you watched or not? How will they know who's watching in pubs? The TV deals have been struck, whether you watch or not won't make a difference or even be noticed. There are far more effective ways of demonstrating.

Will you boycott the Qatar world cup? on 16:19 - Apr 7 with 887 views | jeera | As others have said as individuals banning it in our own homes won't make the slightest bit of difference. Hypothetically though, if it would make a difference would we boycott? I'd say that's a fair thing to ponder on for a moment, as in how far does our hypocrisy go? I think most of us would agree we'd have liked to see a boycott by all nations. I don't mind missing out so much if I know everyone else is!

Personally I feel that china while having a shocking human rights record at least is a sporting superpower, Qatar is a grossly inappropriate place for a football tournament on every level, climate, entire football calendar turned in it’s head, womens and LGBT rights, environment concerns of building from scratch, workers rights, no alcohol, the list is endless. Only 1 reason it’s there and it’s disgusting, would like to think if I was a player I would say no thanks.

But if the vast majority of football fans, as well as casual fans tune in, why should plsyers say ‘no thanks’?

Now that you have mentioned advertising revenue I think there is something practical that we all can do - boycott any products advertised on billboards and hoardings at the World Cup and boycott any products that are advertised on television before, during and after the matches. That way we can still enjoy the football on display and rightfully punish those who could step away from supporting the corruption and exploitation surrounding the tournament but do not do so.

What if ITV advertise one of their shows during half-time? Will you boycott ITV and not watch any of the matches shown on there?

Would make a difference if the players boycott, especially the big names.

As it happens I only watch television on the computer and have only bothered with loading ITVplayer for something on ITV3 (one of our games?, maybe a Scotland game) and never watched it since so I cannot see that being much of a problem. However, if we were to regard the BBC's endless trailers as advertising...

Rather weirdly, when I was channel-hopping & settled on D-Max, then fv 38, whilst eating a sarnie at about 3am a few months ago, I had an on-screen notice pop up & tell me that this smart TV (my biggest, on wall in kitchen) had been picked to monitor as part of a wide survey on UK TV watching habits & that I could disable that if I wanted by pressing yellow. Didn't do so as I don't mind, but wouldn't now know how to that if I change my mind! I don't intend to boycott this WC by not watching anyway - like you, I think that'd be completely futile.
