Anyone familiar with Morocco? 18:20 - Jul 2 with 2055 viewsLord_Lucan

I am clueless.

Thinking about popping over for a week but where's the best place to go?

Don't really want tourist places and preferably no bars, just normal Moroccan life.

Don't mind busy places.

Morocco is a great place, Marrakesh is a must see. It is touristy but still a very nice place to visit. I spent half the time I was there in the Atlas mountains. One of the most beautiful moutain ranges you'll ever see. The variation of scenery is amazing. I stayed in a town called Taroudant (around 3 hours from Marrakesh) for a few nights. Its called mini Marrakesh as it has a few similarities. I don't recall seeing any other tourists while there. There's not that many bars in Morocco so they're easily avoidable. In fact the 3 weeks I was there I only drank on one occasion which is rare for me. The people are generally very friendly too. I plan to go back one day.

I’d suggest Fes and/or Meknes, less touristy than Marrakech. The old town of Fes is like stepping back in time; a labyrinth of streets straight out of medieval times.

Thanks both

My knowledge of the place is so limited I've only just realised by looking on the map that Casablanca is on the seaside.

Any thoughts on Casablanca

I think my other choice might be Istanbul.

Again, all thoughts welcome - or in fact anywhere else medium haul. I just want to avoid tourists and bars.

You must wear a Fez hat and do lots of 'Just Like That' jokes.

They love all that.

I can vouch for Istanbul. An absolutely fantastic city, it’s ancient whilst being in the 21st century.

Mostar in Bosnia is a good leftfield option, fairly small though so not sure how long you plan to visit. Hottest city in Europe too I was told when I was there (39c today).

Fez. My friends have a Riyadh in the medina so I go there quite a lot. Couldn’t recommend it highly enough. It is the biggest urban area in the world with no cars and a world heritage site. Not overly touristy at all and no bars though you can get a drink in the posh hotels if you want and it’s worth going to the riad fes for a drink because of the setting.

If you go hiking in the Atlas Mountains you’ll get a better signal than in rural Essex - and will be able to inform everyone on here about your favourite sheeps’s cheese

We’re out in Marrakech fairly regularly to climb in the Atlas Mountains, a trek up Toubkal gives you great exposure to the Berber villages along the way and is a high enough mountain to be recognised as an achievement. We’ll do 3-5 days walking and climbing followed by 3 days in a riad in Marrakech taking in the souks and having a hammam etc. I’ve also done the hot air balloon ride at sunrise over the Atlas Mountains which is pretty spectacular, particularly if you’ve climbed them as well. The people are extremely friendly, Marrakech is more commercial than it was when we first went out but still has enough authentic charm to make it worthwhile.

Mostar is beautiful as is the whole of Bosnia. Sarajevo is probably my favourite capital in Europe.

Lord Lucan, I am surprised that nobody has suggested that your OP should have stopped after the first sentence.

Had they done so I should of course have condemned them in the strongest possible terms.

Your right to stay away from the tourist areas, you'll just get hassled constantly. Chefchouen and Fez both excellent places well worth visiting.

Fly to Marrakesh, spend an evening troughing lamb bangers in the square, then head over to Essaouira where they are obsessed with Hendrix (castles made of sand innit...) and kick back. Or just bum around Tangier if you want to keep it real.

Morocco is a fantastic country with a ton of stuff to do.

EDIT: as someone else commented, Fez old town is very special indeed, and the city aint that touristy, even though someone will try and sell you a carptet but that will happen everywhere you go.

Seem to remember Joe Orton and Kenneth Williams were big fans if that helps.
