Because ancient astronomers both travelled themselves and wrote to each other. Having observed that midday shadows vary in length depending upon latitude (but not longitude), it's just a matter of finding a long enough baseline to make the calculation easy.

Eratosthenes was the person who calculated this, and also was able to calculate the circumference and tilt of the Earth. Remarkable man.

Cosmos is one of the best books I have read. For those that haven't read it and are interested in the subject then do find the time.
