Barmaids and Accrington pastimes 10:16 - Sep 4 with 2780 viewspatrickswell

Just a few observations on Accrington generally from yesterday:

I know we’re generally above such base concerns on this board, but the barmaid’s cleavage at the Grey Swan pub yesterday really was worth the journey alone, even if we’d lost the game. Honestly, it was the type that people write songs about and build statues in honour of.

After the game, I went for another pint at the Castle in order to let the traffic die down before starting the journey back to Oxfordshire. The locals really seem to be obsessed with playfighting and punching each other hard. I saw a group of kids at a bus stop doing it (fair enough) a couple of twentysomething lads and girls on the road (OK, whatever) 2 women in the Castle after doing shots of Baileys (at 5:35pm) And also a bunch of Rangers fans (no doubt burning off energy after losing a derby 4-0) If that’s the locals at play, I’d hate to see what they were like when they were seriously angry about something.

Walking past the Grey Swan after the game, I saw a Town fan come out of the pub and say to his mates “What a great result, I effing hate this place,” and there seems to be plenty of delight among those who endured the traumas of the FA Cup, losing our unbeaten record in Oct 2019 and the throwing a game away masterclass that we gave there last season. It was my first visit and I enjoyed it. They have a nice set up there and the ground is beautifully situated. The band in the home stand ensure that there’s a good atmosphere throughout, the PA man has a sense of humour - he wished Town fans a safe journey back to Norfolk at the end of the game - I can’t help but wish them well. Like everyone else, I hope that this is the year we get out of the third tier, but to see our team as close up as we’re able to in grounds like the Wham Stadium remains an underrated pleasure.

Economics permitting, my next game will likely be Portsmouth away - and that looks like being a whole other kettle of fish entirely.

Don’t remember a pub called the Grey Swan.

Had a nice pint in the Grey Horse though.

Someone asked me ‘what’s so bad about Accrington?’ after I put on Facebook that I said I’d never return, before the game, and then that I hope we never have to go back, after the game.

And I couldn’t give an answer haha. It’s a nice proper little northern town with some good pubs and a proper football ground, just horrible to go there innit.

Clubs like Accrington are a thoroughly enjoyable day out.

No edge to them, the home fans are genuine down to earth people who love their football.

You can add the likes of Burton, Rochdale etc to that as well. And for the likes of Burton & Accrington, it must be incredible seeing them come on the journey they have in the last two or three decades to be rank and file non-league sides to the Football League.

Sounds like you were a little distracted to be fair. Was GB taking in the sights?

Especially given that there must have been Accrington fans who remember them going out of business in the early 60s on!y to see them return in much longer time than it took Newport or Wimbledon.

I went to a game there and was in a pub on the other side of town with a picture of David Lloyd on the wall and some Accrington fans saw (the collar of) my away shirt and kindly asked if I wanted to share their taxi as I'd struggle to make kick-off without it, so in I got and dug around in my pocket hoping to find some coins so I could chip in for the fare, and I found three quid and gave it to the bloke in the front and he said ta very much and when we got to the ground the three quid covered the ride and the tip, and it wasn't THAT long ago, the year Accrington got promoted from Division 2. I felt like Mike Baldwin getting a round in.

Nope. I was in the Crown enjoying stimulating conversation with Mullet, Mullet senior and Seb from Blue Monday, whilst simultaneously trying to calm down GB junior who was hitting the Jägerbombs.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

I wouldn't have thought Accrington would have been middle class enough to support a David Lloyd Centre.

That sports bar in the ground was decent too, although not sure it will be wise to share that with some club's away fans...

I attended the game with a friend of mine who is a Man City season ticket holder but also an Accrington regular with the appropriate scarf - he loves the place, the people and the contrast with the top of the Premiership. It was great on a sunny day, and I will probably join him again, but not in the depths of winter.
