"On this day in 99.. the greatest manager of our generation took control of the club 🖤"

would it be churlish to add a comment to the effect "its a shame you sacked him then'?

I can't stand the way Newcastle fans harp on about Bobby when they got straight on his back at the first sign of a bad run of form. It doesn't take more than a minute to find stories of him being booed etc.

I’m sure I’ve seen something like this on fb, and a Town fan did indeed post … “we didn’t sack our greatest manager” ( or very similar to this)

Some did after he had been here two and a half years which I suppose is early days in what became a thirteen and a bit year career.

Yes we did and I joined in. He had infuriated the crowd by substituting Mick Hill, the only forward looking likely to score against Man U, for Bryan Hamilton. Mick Hill milked it for all he could.

But it stirred the board into putting up the money to purchase Allan Hunter, the best piece of transfer dealing Robson ever did. Better than the Dutchmen because he inclusion of Hunter turned us into a side able to compete effectively in the division. Without that the Dutchmen would never have come.

The next Saturday with Hunter in was a joy that continued and continued.

Didnt the Cobbolds apologise to Sir Bob the next day and offer him an improved contract?

John Cobbold went into his office and, with Robson expecting the sack, apologised most profusely.

The improved contract cam later.

They thought Robson was an out of date senile old duffer and couldn’t wait to see the back of him. Top six wasn’t good enough. So he was kicked out. Now the geordies have elevated him to god like status - since he passed away. I’ve seen the Newcastle statue of him. It’s not as bad as the laughable horror of Ronaldo in Funchal, Madeira, but it’s not far short.

Yes, Robson got stick here in his early years while he was learning the game. It took him until 72/73 to build a good team. I guess that’s why I’ve always urged patience with McKenna.

Attached is an article from the Guardian about his sacking.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2004/aug/30/football.sallybolton

In this I quote ‘Steve Cole, head of sports at the Newcastle United Supporters Club, told ITV News: "I am surprised at the timing of it but I am not really surprised it has happened. "Robson brought Newcastle from relegation into the Champions League but recently he has lost the confidence of the players and the fans."

Some were disappointed, plenty were pleased to see him gone at the time. They soon regretted it. You regarded my post as ‘a load of bollox’ and you are of course entitled to your opinion. Personally, I found the hypocrisy from that club when Bobby Robson passed away nauseating.

I know a few people from there too, including one of my closest buddies and did at the time and the view was too old, let’s move up to the next level. The only qualms were the way the club shovelled him out. A bit of history rewrite has taken place since - in my opinion.

And after sacking SBR, it went really well for Newcastle, didn't it?
SBR - 11th, 11th, 4th, 3rd, 5th.
Souness - 14th, sacked
Souness/Rodent - 7th
Rodent - 13th
Fat Sam/King Kev II - 12th
Then, 5 managers in a season - relegated
