this is correct, but I think the the umpires are still mindful of the fact that foreshortening often makes things look bad. This one was weird in that it definitely went into the gloves on the full, but may have not then be gathered clearly, whereas sometimes it looks like its bounced up into the gloves. I think it was impossible to tell if there was some glove under the ball, and all he could check was that the ball hadn't bounced before hitting the gloves for the first time. | |

I guess I meant it was a shame that the on-pitch umpire gave it out, because I think it wasn’t clear. That’s not to say I think anyone did anything wrong, and I can see why the keeper thought he’d caught it and had every right to appeal. TV replays rarely show conclusively if a clean catch has been taken, so the soft signal does matter. Modern cricketers now appeal for everything & often claim "catches" which they must know aren't clean. |  |
