Mail readers hate nurses 11:37 - Dec 15 with 2155 views | DJR | A look at the following top-rated readers' comments on the Mail website suggests the right-wing media/government focus on strikes is taking the blame off them for the state of the NHS, although ageing Mail readers are presumably the ones most likely to suffer from a crumbling NHS. And there is the added irony about the comments given the fact that pensioners are getting a 10.9% increase in their pensions. 19%!!!!! What delusional idiots these are. The union Leaders will have blood on their hands. Imagine a company, hopelessly in debt, bailed out with billion upon billion, responsible for the deaths of hundreds of mothers and babies, infecting tens of thousands with fatal diseases........ And then they want YOU to pay them around a fifth more because they are so good. 19% is a shameful demand. What they should be doing is cutting duplication and bloat. That would be able to lead to a fair pay deal. As for them "braving -5" perhaps they should brave going into work! Greed pure greed! 19 percent payrise or they leave people to die, evil! Funny how they never mention their 14 percent employer contributions to their pension pot isn't it when whining about how badly done to they are... Shame on them Disgraceful behaviour from a so called caring profession, punishing the general public. Hope they freeze.

Important to note here that even with private insurance, in the US there can still be considerable wait times to get an appointment for a physical or to have a colonoscopy, for example. The NHS isn’t perfect - no health system ever will be - but it’s rooted in caring for everyone. Protect it and nourish it. It’s worth saving.

Pardon my ignorance- what happens if someone gets seriously ill but doesn’t have medical insurance (or limited cover)? Do they simply get ignored and left to die or will they still be treated just a lot slower?

I seem to remember reading some while back that they have three levels of care. The best for those that can afford it. An intermediate level for those with some money/insurance and a very basic / hope for the best / make your own arrangements level for the rest. I remember just before Covid chatting to a very wealthy American about it in the US. He was the same age as me and I told him I was retiring. He said he wanted to pack up, but couldn’t because his private healthcare plan would kick in at 65 when he retired and his company policy ended. He said he just couldn’t afford or more likely prepared to pay for the gap for himself and wife. Truth or nonsense? No idea, but there was no reason for him to lie to me.

The US healthcare system is complex & very expensive. They spend about 2x the % of GDP on health care than does the UK. It works though private insurance (often supported by an employer), Medicare, which looks after the over 65s & Medicaid, which helps the poor. Waiting times are much shorter than in the UK, but that's probably because we as a nations spend lesson healthcare. The EU average is 11% & we spend 8%. Clearly, if we want better healthcare, we need to pay more for it. There are serious flaws in the NHS, but reforming & improving it, with or without more public money, seems an impossible subject to discuss sensibly in this country.

There is still some basic care I believe. Worth noting the US spend on healthcare at a % of GDP is one of the highest in the world, considerably more than Western Europe and the nordics. However, much of that is hoovered up in over priced drugs and overpaid doctors - just shows what good value the NHS (and peers) is.

If governments aren't prepared to fund it properly because that will involve more taxes, then one solution would be to make those who can afford it pay something towards their treatment. Even more radical would be to mirror one of the successful health systems in Europe, which often involve some form of insurance. Of course, this will howled down by many, but otherwise we seem destined for managed destruction of the NHS, with those who can afford to pay able to get excellent treatment and jump queues, at the expense of the millions who have to wait for treatment. And something radical needs to be done about social care. [Post edited 15 Dec 2022 15:19]

Very true. Indeed, they've all been programmed to hate Harry and Meghan even more than nurses, but it's people crossing the Channel in boats who they hate more than anyone.
Mail readers hate nurses on 18:55 - Dec 15 with 1397 views | HARRY10 | What has struck me when listening to hillbillies warbling on about how universal care is one step down from the works of Satan, is why does the US armed forces not have the same arrangement? Why does this 'pet care plan' nonsense not apply ti the fire service, or the police........of all the other services provided by the government? Why is it that pretty much of 'Western'' democracies have some form of universal health service ? From a country that developed the production line, why is it stuck with, what amounts to, something no better than 19th century production methods ? But then these poor confused simpletons have very low rates of holidays, often no sick pay and pay alarmingly high costs (relatively) for food. Rather like Mail readers, who enjoy all those benefits UK workers enjoy, but hate those who fight for them. A real case of cap doffing, master knows best subservience (Mail readers)

Of course they did because the Mail encouraged it, but the main aim of the clapping in my view was to try to enforce the view that the NHS was safe in the Tories' hands. Just remember the badges that Hancock and Johnson wore.
