And things like 'he ignored the receptionist who was also the hiring manager' are just so obviously apocryphal tales and also just totally dependent on the job you go for as to whether that is important

True Story ... Many years ago I went for an interview at Woolwich BS in the delightful place that is bexleyheath. When I left I wasnt sure how it wen, left and got the train home. Next morning I couldn't find my coat and realised I left it in Woolwich HO. I sheepishly called and spoke to the Personnel Managers PA who said 'oh we wondered whose that was' and offered to send it back to the local branch via their next day internal delivery system. I duly got my coat and wrote a letter of thanks (yes a letter, was in the days before emails). When the contract arrived offering me the job it came with a hand written note saying the thank you was noted, appreciated and such actions do make a difference. [Post edited 16 Jan 2023 12:08]

I'm sure certain things do make a difference, and anything that can give the measure of someone may be the thing that can swing it in their direction etc. But it's just these stupid red lines they claim to draw, best interview ever but because you didn't take a coffee cup back you won't get the job......course that wouldn't happen

I'd have turned you down for the job on the basis you seem forgetful and poorly organised. I'd have kept your coat too if it was a nice one.

A pretty good thing to do imo (and character is what I always prioritise in interviews). As the article says, skills can be taught character not so much. Beyond the basics of course, but nobody should be getting to an interview if they don't have the requisite experience/skills/qualifications.

But then people can be nervous interviewers. If they are all amped up after a long interview they may simply forget to ask about the cup of coffee or water they left. The idea that you could have an otherwise perfect interview and be perfect for a role but lose out because you didn't offer to take the cup back to the kitchen seems utterly mental to me. Reminds me of the tech industry of people being given tech tests that in no way relate to the sort of work they are actually going to be doing. Google unfortunately popularised it some years back and then other people copied it.

I think it being the basis of whether someone is hired or not is clearly a gross exaggeration and probably an article designed to give exposure to this person or business, rather than it actually being THE key marker of whether someone is employed or not. Having said that there's merit in little, softer things like this being indicative of the attitude and team fit of a person.

This clearly took place before demutualisation. These days they'd have sold your coat and kept the proceeds.
