Chaplin is the best finisher we've had for a long time 08:03 - Mar 5 with 1271 viewstractorboy1978

Most of his goals seem to be very similar. He seems to always find a pocket of space and he's incredibly hard to defend against once we get in behind teams. Clinical off both feet in and around the box.

Considering he's often played as a No 9 at other clubs this role really seems to suit him. The Goals Per Shot rates for our players are quite interesting:

Chaplin - 0.15
Ladapo - 0.15
Harness - 0.15
Burns - 0.14
Humphreys - 0.14
Broadhead 0.13

Interesting stat.

I thought some believe that Burns only scores once every million shots.

The following suggest Chaplin's ratio is higher than that, but only just ahead of Freddie's.

Those stats seem just slightly different from the stats for the same players in the league one top scorers section of the bbc website, which may be explained by the fact that the latter is just /league/ games. Looking at the league stats, Chaplin's "shot accuracy" is worse than Freddie's, but his "goal conversion" is better. I'm guessing that accuracy just means whether it was on target or not. Chaplin is more inclined to go for ambitious volleys, and Freddie is more likely to be closer to goal I guess, so it's unsurprising that Freddie is on target more, but I think it's fair to say that Chaplin has been a better finisher this season.

Looking at the top ten names on the league one list, it's pleasing to have two Town players in there, but it's certainly the case that our two players' goal conversion stats are towards the bottom of the top ten. I guess this chimes with the stats that were most complained about during our bad run of form, namely those concerning how many shots it takes us to score a goal, and how few opposition shots it takes for them to score a goal. Mind you, that latter stat was probably totally cured by that flurry of efforts by MK which they managed not to score with!

Interesting to watch him during the warm up. He spends time practicing his drop to the penalty spot and sweeping the ball to the far corner move. For him it is all about muscle memory.

It's a good demonstration on how too much rotation and injury doesn't help the type of player like Chaplin. For his its all about consistency, premeditation and hard work rather than just being an instinctive finisher.

Apart from when the ball is not moving and on the little spot of paint 12 yards out and in the middle of the goal!

On the shot conversion rate issue we take LOTS more shots than other teams which suggests players are under instruction to shoot even when it might not be a great chance.

Top 5 Teams for Open Play Shots Taken:
Ipswich 410
Plymouth 374 (-9%)
Derby 364 (-11%)
Sheff Weds 348 (-15%)
Peterborough 336 (-18%)

On the other stats not quite sure where the difference comes from - I used FBRef for mine and they were filtered for League games only.

We have more of the ball than everyone else don't we, I think this is why we have more shots. Plymouth being so high is probably indication that they shoot on sight quite a bit more than others, given their games often end with a more even distribution of possession.

I think it's the other way a bit if anything. We have tended not to shoot unless its a good chance (perhaps we have a bit more recently which is a good thing). We have tended to overplay a little perhaps if anything. I think the high ranking here just illustrates the domination we tend to have in games. If we took as many pot shots as most teams we'd be even further clear I suspect.

He seems to be at his best when he is on the turn. His goals yesterday came from what were arguably poor balls that went behind him, but he thrives on that, he had to turn to get them ad hit them on the spin.

imagine how much higher it would be if he was even more composed. 2 league goals in 4 months don't forget ;) never a bad thing to want better :)
