Travel Insurance 18:32 - Mar 16 with 1593 views | Coastalblue | Anybody got any reccomendations, seeing as I'm mid 50's with a past think I should probably do it this time for my Borneo trip next month. I will confess I've largely ignored it in the past, though I'm not massively well travelled. Am guessing it won't be cheap?

Travel Insurance on 19:22 - Mar 16 with 1494 views | catch74 | I’ve got a Privilege account with Co- Op bank - so get travel insurance through that. We went to Mexico and my wife was pregnant and we had a scare - night in hospital/ scans/ drip etc - insurance paid out immediately, they were absolutely fantastic (would have been £2700 bill.) We then had my son slice his leg open, he bought a sharks tooth anklet (I should maybe have thought!) and managed to catch his leg really badly on it. Needed stitches. Again insurance paid out promptly. Definitely get it! Don’t think it will be crazy money.

I have same insurance through my Privilege account. A few years back now was on holiday and my youngest son caught chicken pox and we couldn’t fly back as scheduled. I stayed on until he was allowed to fly. The insurance sorted and paid for the flight back, which was to Liverpool instead of Leeds as originally planned, however, they also booked and paid for us to be driven home to Ilkley. They took much of the stress out of the situation, which allowed me to concentrate on looking after my son. Probably not a help to OP, unless prepared to change bank accounts.
Travel Insurance on 20:01 - Mar 16 with 1435 views | WeWereZombies | Not used in anger, couldn't be bothered to even think about making a claim for being bitten by a dog in Tierra del Fuego (the hassle of reporting it the day before I was flying to Buenos Aires...) but for not much more than a couple of hundred quid I got an annual policy from Liverpool and Victoria that allows me trips of up to ninety days at a time and covers a lot of outdoor activity. Easily the best option I came across.

Travel Insurance on 20:07 - Mar 16 with 1428 views | Churchman | Don’t go without it. Insurance is like anything else. It’s a product and some are better than others. MoneySavingExpert site will be quite helpful Insurance can be per trip or annual of you are doing more in a year. I’ve used L&V in recent years due to being a good company and able to get a hefty discount through work, but I’ll be reviewing next time due to Mrs Cs medical issues. In other words, spend a bit of time on it and find what’s best for your needs from a company that will sort things out if the worst happens! Don’t forget vaccinations. You’ll need them for Borneo.
Travel Insurance on 20:22 - Mar 16 with 1392 views | factual_blue | Shouldn't be too bad. If you've pre-existing health conditions, then Explorer Travel Insurance are very good. Borneo is great BTW. Enjoy.

I’m hoping Mrs C’s health issues are minor but if you do struggle to get full cover, this link is worth a try : https://www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/everyday-money/insurance/use-our-travel-insura All the firms in this directory are specialist providers of travel insurance for people with medical conditions.

Ta for that. I’ll look into that in advance of renewal. She has a list of issues, some more problematic than others, but none that stop her doing all the things she enjoys, including travel. It’s just that some things (e.g. atrial fibrillation) give your premium a right kick in the financial gonads.
Travel Insurance on 20:59 - Mar 16 with 1287 views | MedwayTractor | I get mine through my Barclays current account, I pay a monthly fee which includes Europe-wide car insurance and worldwide travel insurance. We went to New Zealand in 2020, the trip was planned for twice the standard 30 days, so I paid extra to extend the travel cover. Half way through the 60 days, we found ourselves caught in a total Covid lockdown and our flights home were cancelled. Then in early August, on the morning of our re-arranged flights, my wife had a "painless" heart attack. She was in hospital for two weeks, had surgery to replace a damaged valve. The insurers were concerned with her fitness to travel, so we weren't cleared to return until the end of October. It took me some time to collate all the information to make the claim for the costs of additional accommodation, car hire, medical costs (the hospital costs were covered by a reciprocal agreement with the NHS), etc. In all the claim came to nearly £5,500, the insurance company didn't question anything and paid in full in 10 days. The insurance was through Aviva, which just goes to show that something good comes from Norwich!

We have the same insurance. Thankfully have never had to claim, but it's good to know that they came up trumps for you!

Apologies if you already know this but if your ehic’s have expired, it would be wise to apply for a free ghic replacement to have as a back up to your insurance : https://www.gov.uk/global-health-insurance-card

Thanks for that. They both long expire before our Portugal river cruise trip (Port wine!!!) in September. I need to sort it out especially as we both will be separately dodging off with our respective chums before that.

I’ve not been but Mrs C spent several weeks out there doing some charity stuff 12 years ago and I then met her in KL for a few days then 10 days in Penang. Great trip for me, even better for her. She loved it there.

Moving around a bit, though a lot of it will be fairly sedate as my Mum will be with me, and she celebrates her 80th while we're there. We start in Sandakan via KL, Sepilok Orangutan centre, Ranau, Kinabalu NP with 2 or 3 destinations. Be honest, it's been booked about 18 months and it's only in the last week I've really started to give it any thought. Re leeches, is it worth buying leech socks? I'm not particularly squeamish about them and not too worried about the odd one at ankle level or so, but if it's more of an issue then I'll grab some to take.

Best to obliterate any leeches on your leg with a bazooka. You're unlikely to actually encounter any.

I can't really see how an atrocity carried out by the Japanese has any relevance to somebody holidaying in Borneo in 2023. Maybe save it until next time somebody is asking for tips re a holiday in Kobe?
