First Holidays/Trips Abroad. 14:50 - Jun 4 with 2499 viewsStochesStotasBlewe

Was just reminiscing about my first holiday abroad.
1972 to Salou aged 11 with my folks and another family. Flew from Luton airport before Lorraine Chase warbled on about it. Y Viva Espana in Spanish was played in the hotel near on non stop.
I even remember it was a package holiday with Clarksons Travel who I believe went tits up later that year.
What have you got fellow TWTDers.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Summer of 1975…
Holland, West Germany & Denmark via Sealink ferry. VW camper (or Dormabiles as they were known then) stuffed with 2 families (9 of us) and towing a caravan. Also packed with food for 2 weeks as ‘the continent’ was expensive in those days. Arguably illegal to have that many people in a van even then?
Anyway, what an adventure for an 8 year old; Amsterdam, Hamburg & Copenhagen and loads of places in between. The culture shock of it all was half the fun and it whetted my appetite for the wanderlust of travel for the rest of my life.

Every time I hear ‘I can’t you anything (but my love)’ by the Stylistics (it was played on the radio what seemed hourly during the 2 weeks) takes me straight back to that first trip abroad.

Germany was my second trip in ‘75 . School geography visit near Koblenz.
Denmark the following year on an exchange visit was a bit of an eye opener too.

1977 to San Antonio in Ibiza. Wasn't quite the party town it is now.

Flew from Norwich with Dan Air. The flight back was delayed by 8 hours in an airport that had no air con at the time, and it went to Luton instead of Norwich, so coach back home and Dad had to go and pick the car up the following day.

Don't boil a kettle on a boat.

1977 ferry day trip new haven to dieppe with my mate

As the restaurant was busy we thought we’d be cool and go to the bar before breakfast, as we were going to France we ordered Pernod ….. obviously

Then had big ferry restaurant buffet fry up

The ferry crossing wasn’t the smoothest

Do I need to say more?

Same year as you near enough. A drive in an Austin van to Tito's Yugoslavia, the island of Havar. Pretty much dirt roads in Yugoslavia I am reliably informed.

Had been across to Europe on a ferry etc. But first flight abroad was actually our honeymoon in 1993 in Florida. 6 hours after arriving there were hurricane warnings and told to keep inside. Just typical!! Having initially fearing a piece of Florida with forever be British, it headed back out to sea and had pretty good weather thereafter.

French exchange, 20th March 1974. Victoria to Newhaven, ferry to Dieppe, and then on to Paris St Lazare to spend 3 weeks with a family I had never met. Arrived a desperately young kid, left still a bit young for my age but able to speak ruddy good French!

It’s not.

Those ferry crossings could be a tad rough. Harwich to Esbjerg, 18 hours, seriously choppy water. Managed to keep everything down, then chundered on the car journey to Aarhus.
Thankfully a very understanding Danish host.

Algeria 1980 on a climbing expedition to the central Sahara.
Shocking trip lost all my gear from the boot of the hire car first night, slept on the embassy lawn that night , arrested under a tree miles from anywhere. What a trip and got the travel bug big time.

Pernod? Pah!

Everyone knows that the pre-breakfast pastis of choice is Ricard.

(And, no, it wasn't me who hit the abuse button).

2001 to Menorca with the family as a 5 year old, my core memory is my Grandad losing his hat on one of those pedal buggies.

Town's 2015 trip to Dusseldorf was my next one, what a trip that was.

Far longer ago than I care to remember, a coach trip through France with two or three overnights en route. Then a week in Estartit on Spain's Costa Brava. Then back through France again.

Family holiday to Blanes in the Costa Brava, would have been about this time of year in 1987, when I was 12.

We stayed in an apartment a couple of floors above a bakery, who seemed to rip us off with our change every time we bought something from them!

1977 to Callela on the Costa Brava for me.

Same as me but I went around 86
Wouldn't listen to my mum and refused to take siestas so stayed in the pool all the time and got badly burnt and sunstroke!
It was the start of my love affair with Spain and eventually moved out here 30 years later
