Foakes should have played. Even if Bairstow played as well.

Crawley and have bairstow open

Probably- yes.

Bairstow is an okay keeper, but with the lack of cricket he cant be sharp or physically conditioned for the job.

That 50/60 runs we left out there by decclaring is looking relevant now too...

Tho without Crawley's innings, the match would look very different.

The trouble is they and a number of sides are far more talented than we are. The whole bazball tactic is to try to negate that and I’m all for it tbh, but our bowling attack hasn’t been refreshed much for ten years and the batting is obviously very hit and miss.

I dont think that is true. Not about talent. We have good players.

And at the moment its pretty even.

Though I think we have blown it with the runs left out there on the first day, and the drops this morning.

In fairness, Stokes ought to be at risk of his place if he keeps going out and trying to prove some point by blasting from the start and getting out. Whats his average since captaincy? Team has performed, but he needs to settle in for a few overs....

The drops/overstep are more significant than the runs, which would only likely have been another 20 or 30 at most (with just two wickets left, one of them Anderson). The Aussies could knock that off very quickly. Having the almost new ball first thing in the morning was far more important, got us important wickets.

When we contest these ashes series at home it’s usually at least close these days, and I mean since and including 2005. Out there apart from the Strauss series we get utterly destroyed.

The pitch was very flat. Robinson and Anderson are capable of hanging around and getting 10 or 15 each. Root at the other end could easily have got 40 or 50 had they done so.

The way Rooot & Robinson were going though, they were getting boundaries in the bag at a rate of knots as free hits.

Can see the logic of the decision, but should have waited to at least get past 400 imho, anything less was too much of a gamble.

I wonder how big a part of decisions like that, pre-determination is in Stokes' mind? The gut instinct of most people I think in that freescoring situation would be to keep making hay while the sun shines & if a wicket goes, OK, then declare. Is Stokes allowing flexibility in his thinking as games develop to adapt to situations, or is he sticking too much to pre-determined strategies? (I don't know the answer btw!).

Yes, it was 12 new balls from England even before the costly one according to TMS. That’s really sloppy stuff in a match that looks pretty even at the moment.

Things look a bit better with Khawaja gone at least.

Another wicket.

We're going to give ourselves an awkward couple of overs to bat before lunch at this rate.

First innings lead start a lot of errors in this Test. Need to bat well now and set a good target, batting last may not be fun.

Is really annoying that five Tests are squeezed into six weeks, this could have need a very compelling series over a couple of months.

With a group of bowlers who can barely get over 80mph that’s an incredible way to wrap up an innings. Just hope they can do something for Mo’s fingers ready for the 4th innings.

A lead is always good but it would look alot better if it was 40 or 50 more which we probably would've had without the declaration. Need a big score now especially if we're going to have a Limited Mo in the 4th innings
I totally agree it would've been better to spread the tests especially as I can't see Broad and Jimmy being able to play every match

The pitch was very flat. Robinson and Anderson are capable of hanging around and getting 10 or 15 each. Root at the other end could easily have got 40 or 50 had they done so.

But equally Lyon could have got them out for nothing, leaving Root stranded. Not many overs before the declaration, people were thinking that Root might not even reach his hundred with wickets falling at the other end.

It forces Anderson to bat, denies England the tricky short spell to the Aussie openers at the end of the day (which which certainly caused them problems) and potentially wastes good bowling time in slightly better conditions the following morning. Warner and Labuschagne both fell within 11 overs, during the first hour, what if Smith had come in after lunch, when things had flattened down?
