Cricket: Day 1 Thread 10:53 - Jul 19 with 3140 viewsSteve_M

England win the toss and decide to bowl. Hopefully they do a better job than when they put Australia in at Lord's. It would be great - obviously - to get this series back to 2-2.

Whilst we wait, have a look at this catch from the SL vs Pakistan Test:

Regardless of the outcome of this series, I'm not sure we can have any complaints about tosses and batting/bowling in the best conditions.

We do often fluff our lines when we bowl in helpful conditions and end up bowling back of a length. This is a situation made for Jimmy, last test on home ground potentially.

Khawaja hasn't managed to keep up his early series form although he's a big part of the reason why Australia lead 2-1.

Good combo that.

I’m sitting down the front of the huge temporary stand in line with the stumps. Did not expect sunshine when I booked them.

Then off to the Open tomorrow. Decent week (following Essex at Edgbaston on Saturday too!)

My mate went in there during the last Ashes, somewhere near the back on a pretty wet, windy day. It didn't sound much fun.

You can't stand underneath it when it rains either because the water leaks through.

Putting Australia in seemed a questionable decision at the time & it looks a bit more questionable now. Australia batting deep with 2 all rounders & Carey at 8. If we get them out for under 300, that's a good result. Pitch looks a belter but has carry, which the Australian quicks will appreciate.

I was in there with my brothers, 1 row from the top last time to see Smith hit 200 for them. It was cold and grey that day. Only consolation was drinking all the booze we managed to smuggle in.

187/4 at tea. We've got the wickets but the run rate has been too high. Kind of feels like Australia could take the match away from us a bit without more wickets soon.

I'm not surprised they dropped Murphy after they didn't trust him to bowl.

Interesting day really, looks pretty even at the moment after those last two wickets but plenty of runs still available for Australia. Would be nice to wrap this innings up tonight.

299/8 make that a pretty good day for England, will need to finish this innings off early tomorrow though. That and bat well.

Still very ebb and flow this series. It felt at time Aus were getting away from us but we kept pegging them back. Shows the advantage of attacking batting as within 10 overs a partnership can really seize the initiative.

A sub 320 score will be handy for us. I think Aus would've wanted a lot more judging from the line up they've gone with. Us (presumably) batting last without facing a frontline spinner could really work in our advantage if it keeps tight.

I thought having won the toss on a very flat pitch with decent weather on days one & two, we should have batted first. Bat positively, get 400+ & then put Australia under pressure with deteriorating weather at the weekend. This test might only have three days so the draw now looks quite favourable. We’ll see what happens tomorrow!

The lack of an Australian spinner may have influenced our decision to bowl first & bat last, but after Murphy looked so poor at Leeds, maybe not. Another day which emphasises how little there is between the 2 teams.

I suspect the weather outlook had a fair bit to do with it. We need to take 20 wickets and getting amongst them early gives us the best shot at that. Having them 8 down at close on the first day isn't a bad effort as the pitch looked decent and most of the clouds dissipated very quickly.
