Could we see Morsy, Luongo and Taylor all starting in certain games? 22:48 - Jul 19 with 2904 viewsunstableblue

I’m not sure how well Taylor played tonight, or where what position he was taking up (anyone?)

But can you really drop one of Luongo and Morsy? They are that good

Could they play Taylor in a deeper 10 with Chaplin and Broadhead either side of him? With the full backs providing the width?

It is very unlikely that Luongo would make a full season as a starter. Not a knock on him, but his injury record has been spotty, not to mention that we'll likely be fouling on the break more this season so we will likely lose Morsy for a couple of games for yellows. So I would imagine you will see a bit or rotation

I can’t see us changing our shape to accommodate Taylor. Equally I don’t think we’ve chased him for so long and dropped £1.5m for him to warm the bench, so something has to give. I would think it’s Luongo’s shirt to lose, but won’t be too long before Taylor is starting games.

That’s where we’re at I would think. Hutchinson will have a say in that if he signs though, and Harness is doing his best to give KM something to think about. As is Ball perhaps for Clarke on occasions. Partner for Woolf feels the most pressing priority.

Taylor is not shy with a booking, either. Think he got 8 yellows last season. So I'm with you on the need to rotate now and then...

I don’t think we’d start that way but as an in game switch it’s possible as a tactical change if attacking numbers or more control in that area was required. I don’t know how much they scenario plan those changes in training though.

As a team, Ipswich had an average of 2.13 Points per Game last season. These are the only players who played more than 1,000 minutes and outperformed that:

Luongo 2.73
Broadhead 2.42
Clarke 2.35
Hirst 2.29
Burgess 2.27
Woolfenden 2.15
Morsy 2.14

I'm not getting this urgency to bump Burgess out of the team - was pretty much rock solid in our run-in last season, and has built a good partnership with Woolfenden.

I think it'll be a change up option for us to go with more of a 4-3-3 at times, Chappers to move slightly further to the right (although he increasingly occupies that channel a lot anyway) and the space in the middle to be filled by the midfielders breaking forward in turn. Gives us a bit more solidity and more bodies in the middle in the park in games where we might otherwise risk getting overrun.

We showed last year we've got more than one way of paying, those tough away games in the run in we were less concerned with dominating the ball and instead we largely used our shape to stifle the opposition threat and played with pace on the break. To not concede a single goal away at Bolton, Derby, Peterborough, and Barnsley shows just how capable we are of holding a solid defensive shape, and being able to drop a man into midfield will potentially add to that in certain game situations.

I do agree that Burgess did very well last season, I just think he has a lower ceiling than a number of our players and I’m not convinced he’s one that will flourish at a higher level. Not to discredit his contribution but for the most part he was in a very dominant side, but there were occasions where he looked suspect. Especially 1-on-1, looks flat footed at times and don’t think it’s a strength of his. I think back to the cheap penalty he gave away at Bolton that could’ve been so costly. Was it Wycombe away as well where their goal exposed him. All players make mistakes, they all have flaws hence why they’re not top tier, and he’s undoubtedly a monster in the air, but for me he’s one where we can do better. Recent links to Trusty might point to that being something we’re thinking about and I wouldn’t be too disappointed to see him replaced.

It feels a bit harsh and I’m all for trusting players that got us here. I hate the ‘he’s a league 1 player, he’s a championship player’ nonsense you hear spouted, it’s a lot more nuanced than that and the right system and environment is more important. Not to mention we were already a championship side with a league 1 status last season, especially the last 1/3. I just think with the eyeball test he’s one that might be less equipped.

I’d imagine we will play 11 a side. Starting with only 10 is a bit arrogant.

I think a fit llungo will play fairly regular pass to Jackson for opener wasn't bad. Long season ahead will be injuries and suspensions so think depth of a quality squad is paramount,

Good post Herbie

I do think set piece solidity is coming out as a risk area in pre-season so we’ll see a further defensive addition and work on shape and system

I like Burgess. Not sure why anyone is commenting on his ceiling. When he continually improved last season. And we've got a manager that will continue to improve him and others..
He's got his detractors, same as Freddy and KJ. And people will jump on their every mistake.
We're a team that takes risks. Doesn't matter who plays at the back, they are going to get caught out now and then. The only time it will cost us, is when we fail to convert, the many, many chances we create from taking said risks....
Didn't watch the game last night. But from the match reports we had a few chances to be 3 or more goals to the good. If we put those away, it's easier to see the game out. And relieves the pressure on our defence, mentally. Ergo, they'll make fewer mistakes.

Part of a defence that just stopped conceding goals. Wins everything in the air and is a good left footed passer.

The only question mark is he can be a bit flat footed which, yeah might be more of an issue in the Champ, but he’s definitely earned a fair crack of it.

There will be rotation, KM likes intensity which is hard to do as CM so having good depth there is crucial.

That was one thing I felt we lacked last season due to injuries, Humphries is a talent for sure but felt he was a little out of his depth playing as many full games as he did last year.

Morsy, Luongo, Taylor, Evans and Ball is a very solid group of CMs, I expect Humphries to go out on loan, but hopefully him and Camara have loans that can be recalled should we need to.

I wouldnt be suprised to see KM sign a couple of CBs, one old one young and then you have more backup at CB and CM should Wolfy or Clark be asked to play there which I am sure they could do a job.

I wonder if occasionally we might go to a 4-3-2-1 when we’re away from home, which would allow for all 3 to play with Chaplin and Broadhead playing off Hirst
