Not that I'd risk leaving a bike, even a rubbish one, at in town unless I didn't want to see it again. It's a shame the club don't promote cycle parking as an alternative to car parking, disappointing also the supporters club are more concerned about roadworks delaying people driving to games then pushing the club for sustainable travel alternatives. Several clubs offer secure cycle parking facilities, Liverpool have a cycling hub, Arsenal have about 150 spaces too, there's another club in the league who have decent facilities but can't remember who they were, just for comparison the Amsterdam arena has 3000 cycle parking spaces for the ground. but most English league clubs like Ipswich offer very little and most like Ipswich will print some waffle about the environment and a carbon zero game at some point this season, whilst ignoring the car shaped elephant in the room. Town have the space to offer secure cycle parking, but the council direct you to park in the Portman Rd car park, but i wouldnt park there.

I was wondering that - assuming by "good" you mean "safe" [Post edited 10 Aug 2023 16:21]

An excellent idea. Why not ask the club if they'd be up for doing something? I wonder if there might be space somewhere around the fence edge of the old practice pitch? Could potentially have a gateway in there into a secure area and some kind of token system to allow entry. Manned by a volunteer or a spare steward?

Yes, I meant something quite visible (e.g. to passing stewards) and with something you can lock the bike TO. At Colchester, they do have these kind of bike racks right by the turnstiles , but only a few people use them. It doesn't feel risky to leave a good bike there. By contrast, at the Malmö (Sweden) ground there are bike racks for at least a couple of thousand bikes, and these will be full for almost every game. (To my mind, they're not the best type of rack, being just the ones where you wedge the front wheel into the rack but have nothing obvious to chain the bike TO. ) [Post edited 10 Aug 2023 13:52]

YEah, they are all over the place. Portman Road Car Park has racks, Elm Lane does and the Crown Court does too.

There is secure bike parking in the SCC car park, but you have to be SCC to be allowed in there. Wouldn't harm them to open it up to the general public for footy games.

My bike'snot worth a lot, except to me. But no way would I leave it, especially at night, in those unpoliced areas. The club should be prividing a secure option

Loving the new bus lane on 16:30 - Aug 10 with 1563 views | jayessess | Football stadiums in general seem to be unfriendly to cycling. I remember doing train then bike to Wycombe a couple of seasons back and they had nothing at all there, despite the whole thing being surrounded by a car park. Went from Walthamstow to Sutton United last Saturday and it was little better (two racks in front a portacabin, with one rack too close to a wall to be used on both sides). Was thinking of appending a longish cycle to my trip to Portman Road on Saturday (going to get the train to Witham and cycle 35 miles ish) but hadn't considered what I'd do at the other end!

Went to AZ Alkmaar recently. I reckon about 80% went by bike. Thousands left outside the ground. I suspect nobody nicks them because everyone has got one.

Loving the new bus lane on 19:21 - Aug 10 with 1384 views | ronnyd | I know it was a long time ago now, but i biked from Bury St Eds to watch Town play Aris Salonika in our UEFA cup winning season. Left work at 5pm and at 6.30ish stopped for a sandwich at Paper Mill Lane nr Bramford. Seemed easy on the way to the game as mostly down hill. No A14 to worry about either. Seemed to take an age getting back. Got home to Horringer Ct, just after midnight. Happy days, but never did it again.

When I was a kid biking to Felixstowe was like climbing the Eiger. People were spoken about in hushed tones. Now cyclists do it without breaking sweat, although I'd like to see them do it on a 3 speed Sturmey Archer with cow horn handlebars.
