One was on BBC news earlier and they asked how he knows Trump is right. After some silence and looking away he eventually replied "because I am intelligent". It is a cult. Hopefully with many fewer followers than before.

You'd hope so but I think he wins.
I don't thinks he's lost any base support which if baffling and sleepy Joe has just looked sleepier and sleepeir.
The Democrats need him to step aside so they can put someone with a bit of vigour up otherwise I think they lose.

Because he is all they have left.
They have an Alf Garnett type view on things. It is quite obvious to even them that for the most part they are on societies bottom rung. But for Alf he had the consolation of being part of the 'greatest' thing in history. The British Empire.... and he was not black.
The Queen, Churchill, the flag, the national anthem. All were there to re-affirm his place in the world. So anyone or thing that casts even the slightest doubt on those things was the enemy to Alf, a blasphemer. Alf even laid claim to god. "He is English, look at the bible, it's written in English."
Unfortunately for these simple souls, most important people do not subscribe to their view of things. They are the enemy. The unbelievers, the ungodly. Trump is important. Like Johnson he knows what these peoples want is for their delusions not to be shattered, with facts. If it means lies, then so what ? Like a child with a bed time story they want reassurance. A comfort blanket that takes them back to 'better' days. Less stressful is perhaps more the case.
Once this job was performed by priests, bishops and all manner of similar charlatans, spinning between the carrot and the stick. Lovely heaven, or eternal damnation, hell.
It is not just that Trump and Johnson are shameless liars, indifferent to the harm they cause. But why are some folk in need of those lies ? Can they simply be dismissed as thickos, or righties ?
Or is there more to it, an explanation for this behaviour ?
