Made me think how far we can go back with 5 Town players to have overlapped (post debut, not academy). Might be wrong here but I think: Woolfenden > Hyam > Peters > Naylor > Forrest Takes us back to the mid 80's.

Stockwell for Forrest? Stockwell made his debut in December 85, Forrest in 87. So Stockwell would have overlapped with Terry Butcher. [Post edited 22 Sep 2023 12:03]

If you drop John Wark into that, yoy can add Mick Mills or Colin Viljoen Not sure if they ever played in the same team as Ray Crawford in his second stint but that would be quite something. [Post edited 22 Sep 2023 12:07]

Yes, going back Mick Mills is surely the main man in this chain. I guess quite a few players could fill that annoying little gap (82-85) between him and Stockwell.

Ahh I was thinking team / squad mate at the time of their debut, rather than in the actual debut team with them. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

So 4 players of separation between Woolfie and Butcher? On the basis of being in the squad together. I like it. Butcher > Stockwell > Naylor > Peters > Hyam > Woolfie

Mills and Viljoen both take this back to 1966. (Viljoen may not have actually played in the same XI as Butcher, I guess.) (Apologies, too long typing so I missed the point already made.) [Post edited 22 Sep 2023 12:42]

Never realised Jason Dozzell played with Mariner on 12:54 - Sep 22 with 2071 views | ChampionsofInnsbruck | Stockwell, Yallop, Dozzell, Putney, Forrest, David Gregory, Kiwomya and even Atkinson were all about during that transitional 84-87 period as Butcher, Burley, Gates, McCall, Osman, Wark (left and came back) and Cooper all left. There was quite a lot of continuity at the club for a long period right up until the middle of the Evans era, with the influence of Sir Bobby stretching on through the 80s with players from his youth set up coming through, and then Burley/Wark continuing to bring that influence to the 90's generation. Craig Forrest was once the understudy to Paul Cooper, and Richard Wright was the understudy to Craig Forrest, Wright had a number of spells which meant he played alongside the likes of John Wark and Aaron Cresswell.

Wark played in the same team as Naylor, so you can replace Butcher and Stockwell with him and go back even further.

I reckon the 'era' of continuity lasted quite a bit longer at Town than at most clubs. I wonder how many different team-mates Mills had in his entire Town career, and how many Woolfenden has had. Similar numbers?

John Wark played with our FA Cup/UEFA Cup and runners up twice sides, played in our 1992 2nd Div/Championship winning side, and played alongside a chunk of the players who won the Playoffs, and then a handful still remained that finished 5th in Wright, Naylor, Scowcroft ... weird when you start thinking about it.

I wouldn't think so, as he's still a link between two different players that he played with.

The shortest link has to be Sivell > Stockwell > R Wright Laurie Sivells first season at the club was 1968, he played football combination reserve games with Micky Stockwell whose last involvement with the club was the playoff final in 2000 where Richard Wright was in goal. Wrights last Town app was 2011 43 years and just 3 players in that loop. Gets even better as Sivell was at the club with Ray Crawford. So just 4 players linked between our league winning side and 2011. [Post edited 22 Sep 2023 14:58]

2 sides to look at that. The season he left Mariner had scored 11 in 23 appearances. On the other hand he was 31 and his best years behind him. At Arsenal then Pompey his strike rate was 1 in 6. On a completely unrelated note, I always thought we should have signed Mark Hateley as a replacement. Though, in reality all our incomings were needed to pay for Mr Pioneer.

You're right. Every bit of cash in went towards paying for that stand. The Pioneer stand was resented for a lot of years while we had dwindling gates and a slowly declining quality squad.
