One of Cummings public utterances about govt is how slow they are to act 10:52 - Oct 31 with 4580 viewsbluelagos

Just heard there was a 10 day gap between the govt deciding on a lockdown and the lockdown being implemented.

How the fck in 2020 can it take 10 days to implement a policy when every single day's delay cost lives?

"The blob" is often used in a disparaging way to slate the civil service and their resistance to change etc. but 10 days really does seem beyond ridiculous in such an urgent case.

This afternoon when Cummings is on, could be enlightening...

Cummings is clearly a tw*t, not least cos of his day trip to Barnard castle. Dishonest and self promoting for sure.

But I think history will note that he played a key role in dragging Johnson kicking and screaming to the lockdowns rather than "letting it rip" as Johnson/Sunak wanted.

Cummings grasped the modelling and what was coming if we did nothing, which am not convinced Johnson or Sunak ever did.

Do people still think lockdowns work after everything that has happened? I thought they had realised by now. Perhaps I am wrong.

Didn’t they say the delay was because it was half-term as well.

Agree. Evidence today and yesterday said Cummings said he has to effectively babysit Johnson for 2 hours to stop him making stupid decisions

So yesterday Reynolds was put on the spot why there were 10 days were little/no interaction with Johnson - Reynolds couldn't say until it was pointed out it was half term. (That was in Feb)

Today - Cain just said the decision was taken on March 14th to lockdown - something they announced on 24th and was enforced from 26th March.

Thanks.

Still ridiculous, bordering criminal, that a PM can’t be found by the most senior civil servant for 10 days

Johnson is coming out of this incredibly poorly. Dithering, often absent and absolutely unable to make a decision.

That's before you consider the constant mind changing and his inability to make a tough decision for his obsession with populism/being liked.

I just don't think he properly grasped the maths behind it.

I think Johnson missing was it 5 meetings on Covid speaks volumes to the man. We can add lazy to the many other characteristics that made him unfit for public office.

Depends on how you measure 'success' - financially they are not great, for business or for the government.

Keeping people alive....yeah, they work but hey, it also depends on your priorities.

If you read the article it clearly points the finger at policy failures pre-lockdown as to why we fare poorly compared to our neighbours who had far more rigorous and competent implementations.

Who'd have thought that a covidiot would have poor reading comprehension and critical thinking skills, eh?

To be fair to them they were pretty swift to act in awarding multi-million pound contracts for PPE provision to their chums in fashion and electronics, were they not?

This Cain character has almost exactly the accent and intonation of the Chris Addison character in The Thick Of It, when he was facing an enquiry. Particularly when he's not very confident of the ground he is on.
