Shout out to Taylor 07:59 - Jan 23 with 2409 viewsHerbivore

Think almost everyone has had a shout out now, but wanted to single Taylor out in particular. He's had a slightly rocky time here, found it hard to break the axis of excellence that is Morsy and Luongo which must be frustrating, and when he has had a chance it's been a slightly mixed bag of performances from him. Last night though I thought he was great when he came on. Probably his best and most consistent use of the ball, always showing for it, and was a big part of helping us to get up the pitch and have a foothold in their half for most of the last 25 minutes. He's been overshadowed a bit by the more eye catching forward subs, but without him on the pitch I'm not sure we'd have gone on to take a point.

He's got a Lee Evans style cross field pass in him too. Developing very well recently,

Agree with that. The midfield change was just as much of a catalyst than Sarmiento and Hutch coming on in my opinion. I think Taylor has looked nervous and almost uncomfortable on the ball in previous games and maybe that is confidence, due to the fact he hasn't been able to force his way in front of the impressive Morsy and Mass.

Last night though, he looked much more calm and assured. I also think Mass seemed to step up and get into the game more when he came on.

Yes Taylor did well didn't he . I thought Mass had an odd game first half I thought he must not be fit as he struggled quite a lot but second half he was very good .

With the added bonus of being leaner, faster, and better equipped to play in the championship.

Yeah, think his athleticism in the middle is a real asset. Much as Morsy and Luongo are superb they are both pretty slow whereas Taylor is capable of eating up the ground pretty quickly, he's very mobile. This season probably hasn't gone as he'd hoped but I'm really pleased we have him here, think he's a real asset.

As you mention on the other post, our subs have had a huge impact to this season, even if Taylor continues to play a part here and there it really is a proper group effort.

I think there is a case for playing Taylor in addition to two out of Morsy, Luongo, Travis. Would add to our solidity, avoid some of the times we are outnumbered in midfield and Taylor carries a decent goal threat. It would mean a tweak to the formation and a regular starter dropping out.

I don't think there is a case for that when we're sat second in the league at the end of January. We don't need to be changing formation at this point and much as I like Taylor, I don't want to be dropping one of our front four to accommodate him. He's a good option as a number 8.

I think his use of the ball was good, as you said the best I've seen from him so far. I do find however that he is taking longer to learn his role that I would have expected, particularly given the speed at which most other signings have learnt from McKenna. There was a moment yesterday towards the end where he was late in pressing their midfielder who picked up the ball, he then overcommitted and hurried in, and a simple couple of passes worked it around him and he was then chasing back and out of the game, he then did the exact same thing 2 minutes later (I think both were him, I haven't watched it back so if I'm wrong I retract this statement and offer a wholehearted apology to Jack).

I don't think he should be playing with Luongo and Morsy, but I think he's a better replacement for Morsy than Travis is going forward. With Luongo and Travis, we really miss the outlet from the back. Taylor is much better at showing for that ball on the half turn. Against all but the top teams, if we miss Morsy again, I'd rather see Taylor with one of Luongo or Travis, than Luongo and Travis together. Sacrifice potentially a bit of bite, with a bit of guile.

Was noticeably determined to try and pass it forwards earlier as well, think that forced the players ahead of him to make better movements to receive the ball as they knew that's what was coming.

Also helped having people like Sarmiento and Hutchinson on at that point who are much much better at being able to take the ball in tight spaces and use it than the likes of Harness and Jackson. Not a dig at the latter two as they have their own attributes and uses but it takes them about 5 or 6 touches to get the ball under control properly whereas the aforementioned youngsters do it in 1.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Taylor is a good player who wants to be even better. Gives the midfield a bit more bite and always willing to get forward.

He is a Premiership player.

The quality of first touch is the biggest difference between some of our players - who, as you say, bring other attributes to the table - and players of Prem quality. It was noticeable last night with both Leicester's players and our subs.

Indeed. Absolute weapon of a right foot as well. He's a bit of a throwback number 8, he can do a bit of everything.

Yeah was striking last night in the first half that Leicester had a full team of players just so comfortable taking the ball and moving it on quickly which meant we couldn't get near them for the most part. On the ball and particularly off it they were a step above what you normally get in the Championship, even among the good teams.

Saying that, think their GK would look much more dodgy if he didn't have such a confident backline in front of him.
