Cresswell still got a wand of a left foot 20:16 - Sep 25 with 2248 viewscbower

Two lovely deliveries from dead balls early on at Anfield. Jewell's best signing by a country mile.

Can't fathom why Mick decided to sell him!

Know it was a while back, but 3.75 mil rising to 7 was an absolute pittance!

I know that many love to knock Mick McCarthy at any opportunity, but he didn't decide to sell him. The decision was made higher up than Mick. He made it clear he wanted to keep him, and described him as the best left back in the Championship. Milne spoke to the press when the sale was announced, and /he/ said "I think it’s time for him to step up to the Premier League". Mick never said that.

It's also easy to describe the fee as a pittance now that we're paying £20m for players, and Birmingham are reportedly paying north of £10m in League One. But it was a decent amount of money at the time, and fans were generally content with the fee, despite obviously being disappointed to lose such a wonderful player.

The one we should have been more upset by was Webster for £3.5m (I think).

Thought the same thing watching tonight! Always struck the ball so sweetly. Could really defend too. Great player. McKenna would have liked him - technically excellent and a real engine on him too.

Agree with that. Whoever negotiated that deal 😉 took us to the cleaners. Bristol C reportedly got £20m from Brighton one year later.

The fee for Cresswell was ok at the time. He was a good, proper full back from his first game for us and just got better and better. Terrific player who well and truly deserved the top level career he’s had. Unlucky not to play for England.

Cresswell did play for England (3 times).

Deserved to play more... corrected it. Always looked like a player who could have got double digits caps for England especially once Cole left. I mean he was so much better than Baines ffs.

The only thing is probably West Ham didn't really put him in a position to succeed, he was a top player and now his career has just gone like that. Time flies so fast. European trophy though!

Because we had a neglectful, incompetent owner and Mick needed to fund the next season.

Plus, we had Mings.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

My intention wasn't to knock Mick McCarthy in my post... Just can't understand why we sold him on the cheap, also had no idea that the decision was made further up. Guess he was our only sellable asset at that point in time. Can't remember Cressy pushing too hard for a move away either

Cressy was one of my fave town players and I'm gutted that he left

Different players completely and I'd say that Mings was probably always more likely to be a CB as opposed to a left back due to his size..

In my view Cressy was better than Mings, albeit different sorts of players

I spoke to Cresswell's dad at a game near the end of tge previous season, 12 months before he went to West Ham. He told me there was a gentleman's agreement in place that Aaron would sign a contract extension but the club would allow him to leave for Premier League club if a suitable figure was put on the table. He did not disclose what that figure was, but I guess West Ham met it.
