Had the chance now to view the YouTube highlights which you can pause properly unlike Sky's, and I'm still seeing him get the ball clear and the oncoming player just blundering over his leg through momentum.
He doesn't play the player, only gets the ball. I'm not sure it's even a free kick?

It's an absurd decision, I'm not sure how the ref can see the ball go at a right angle and make that decision.
It's one of the incredibly strange parts of VAR. Had he given that a penalty, it would have been overturned with no yellow yet because it's outside the box it is not reviewable.

My only assumption was that the ref deemed him to take the standing leg too, but that’s still not clear and obvious.
I also wondered why the first yellow stood if the decision of the free kick was then deemed a penalty. Wasn’t clear to me at all why VAR got involved when the ref made a clear decision for a free kick. |  |

I don't think that VAR checks for yellow cards, but surely they have to when it's a second yellow and therefore alters the match so significantly?

If they’re going to intervene in free kick decisions then they should be consistent with cards too. The clear and obvious problem is, where does it stop? The game will be run by two ferrets tucked away in a hutch out of view accountable to no-one other than their superiors. In truth, they could referee anywhere in the world without even needing to be present.
It’s a complete and utter shambles and it’s inexplicable why 19 of the 20 PL sides voted to keep it. [Post edited 27 Oct 2024 14:10]

Looking at the Arsenal Liverpool game and the live footage from the VAR room as they are making decisions it is pretty bad on many levels.
They look so stressed and unsure.

Games gone to the dogs. Refereed with common sense and an eye on the cheating that's now accepted as normal and has ruined football, there wouldn't have been even a yellow shown to Harry Clarke for either yellow he was given. Should've been two yellows to Cheaten Lewis Potter for cheaten. We now need 4 points from every 3 games, not going to happen.
Can we not appeal both cards as both were unjust |  | | |
