What is it about Connor Chaplin that officials dislike so much. Last couple of seasons I don't remember a player getting fouled so much without ever getting a free kick or a penalty. He's hardly a cheat. No wonder he was mouthing off at the 4th officials when he came off today.

This is going to sound strange - he has a ridiculously odd way of going to ground. Refs obviously don’t like it. Looks fake and staged I guess

By letter of the alw it was a foul but he does throw himself rather. Doesn't make it hurt any less how it transpired after that!

He goes down a lot that's why. Sometimes because of a foul but he also likes to make a foul happen, not a slight I'm anyway just something he's always done.

a niche perspective

He goes down easy. First viewing I thought he'd tried to buy the penalty massively. On second viewing it looks more like a foul but he still looks lightweight sometimes.

If a player bigger than you barges in you are going to look “lightweight” aren’t you!

Watching him these past two games has been a delight, love the guy. 'Cheat' is a strong word I'd avoid yet he is one of our most street-smart. He's the one we choose most often to take a seat midway through a half so McKenna may make his tactical adjustments. He also often looks to fall on contact, though I don't remember him ever diving when there wasn't any.

On viewing it I can see that to a degree but the overwhelming feeling is that the guy goes through him like a train and whatever he did he’d have been dumped on the ground

Not if you're Sam Morsy.

Chaplin has struggled physically at times, it's hard to ignore that.

I think it's a penalty on balance but I can also understand the referee seeing it in real time and viewing it as a coming together and the attacker looking for it. Then VAR has the question of whether it's so bad they should overturn. It's the same question every week, there will always be controversy with it.

When players "make a foul happen" it doesn't make it any less of a foul though.

That’s how I saw it. At the game I thought he was looking for it. Watching it back it looks nailed on. Don’t understand why VAR hasn’t even looked at it
