Total commitment, fights for the team every second he's on there. Human dynamo. Still comes over to salute us at the end despite a horrific clash of heads. Such a huge part of the team and squad culture. That first league goal away at Bolton still sticks in the mind. Never looked back. But he's so much more than goals. Epitomises everything we're about.
George Hirst appreciation post on 19:29 - Nov 11 with 2039 views | cbower | He has more effective pressing and holds the ball up better than Delap but he's not as skilful, quick nor potent infront of goal. Will we ever see them on the pitch together? Certainly not in a 442 but possibly with Delap in one of the positions behind the front man. I think Hirst will get plenty of minutes, start some games and score a few along the way. Right now though, Delap is the man.

I have a vague recollection of an interview with a manager who was asked what his star goalscorers best position was. His answer was Pest. That's Delap to a T.

Sounds like Vardy! Not knocking him, but his game is completely built around being exactly what most defenders don't like playing against: Pace Constant movement Clever positioning A little bit of nastiness when necessary Lethal finisher when he gets the chance Still as hungry in 90 +8th minute as the first. Hirst doesn't have Vardy's pace, and has the compensation of being able to mix it aerially with Central Defenders better than Vardy, but he has a lot of these other attributes. I would love to see him with Delap. It's something McKenna doesn't seem to like to do, but most teams are set up to deal with one "big man up top". On the rare occasions that Kieffer Moore and Ali Al Hamadi were on the pitch together last season, they caused chaos. Hirst and Delap together could do similar. Good in the air and on the floor. Kind of a 21st Century Whymark and Mariner redux.

Delap is a huge unit & is very happy to use his size & strength. That's very important when you're fighting for scraps up front. While he's aggressive, he seems to keep it under control & has only picked up 2 yellows so far this season.

George Hirst appreciation post on 17:44 - Nov 12 with 1016 views | Nutkins_Return | Bloody love Hirst. £1.5 million. What an absolute steal! (In fairness our sense of fee has changed considerably). If ever there was a case of a striker being more than their goal output. You could imagine a club signing Hirst and their fans questioning the signing based on his goal record. But love him. The ultimate team striker.

Shows how good characters are just as important as skillful players. “I think we've got a real good changing room,” he said. “No matter who's playing and who's not, we don't have any sulkers or any toxic players in the group. “I think for me, it's very much healthy. It keeps you sharp, it keeps you switched on. You know you can't rest even for a day because that one day you do rest or maybe don't train as well as you possibly could, that might be the day the gaffer is picking the team in his head, and you've just played your way out of it a little bit. I think we've got a great squad for that, and long may it continue.” [Post edited 12 Nov 2024 18:10]
