Fried Bread 10:24 - Nov 17 with 4734 viewsChurchman

Mrs C was watching Strictly last night (zzz) and it was in Blackpool. Now Blackpool is just about the biggest sh£thole I’ve ever been to. Makes Yarmouth look like Venice. But when I went with my cricket chums last year there was a consolation.

We had a full English in a cafe and it was monster. Good quality bacon, sausages, beans, mushrooms, hash browns, black pudding (yuck), tomato, eggs, toast, tea and to make it even better …..a pile of fried bread.

I hadn’t had it in many years and there it sat, golden and glistening in the morning light. Perfectly fried, it was stonkingly good.

Now I know it’s a heart attack in bread form. In fact all of that breakfast was created by Satan, but dear me it wasn’t half good.

What is the forum’s view on the good old FB? The proper original version of thick sliced white bread fried in oil or lard until golden brown.

I love fried bread, especially with tinned tomatoes on top.

I don't mind it crispy but not so much that it pings everywhere when you cut it.

Best made with slightly old white cut bread.

I have fried bread for breakfast often. Not so keen on white bread, prefer that half-and-half semi-wholemeal stuff.

But it's a lot better (to eat) than toast, given modern steam-baking techniques leave the bread so moist that toast is just soggy and inadequate. Whereas frying boils that off.

I do a physical job, so high energy intake at breakfast is quite important.

Fried bread is lovely & i much prefer it so the often soggy toast you get served with full English. I order it when available & while it is unhealthy, nothing wrong with eating something unhealthy occasionally.

Indeed, shouldn't be rock hard, just nicely crispy.

Yeah, there is optimum crispyness.

A few moments too long and you are going to be firing shrapnel when you cut into it or if you stuff it straight in the gob, you’re going to be wearing some of it. The Rab C Nesbitt look isn’t good.

While piling delights on it like tomato, bacon etc is ok, I think it works best alongside. That way you retain that right level of crisp and joy.

Obviously, as pointed out by Keno and others, fried bread with a egg on top is the food of the gods. Fried bread with beans on top is also delicious.
But never put beans and egg on yer fried bread at the same time or the bean juice will run into yer egg yoke ruining yer fry and yer day.

Feck Ken, you should be on masterchef. Any thoughts on what one should wash it down with?

Never had an Ulster Fry. My golfing chum had one a few weeks ago as he always does when he is there and reckons it’s about as good as it gets. Never tried soda bread either. The to do list gets ever longer!

Had a fry in Co Roscommon on Wednesday. Come with all the usual plus boxty, chips and onion rings. Wasn't sure about the extra additions at first but was starving and wolfed it all down like a champ.

I’ve never heard the term Boxty before. Had to look it up and yes perleeese! Definitely up for that!

Not quite the same, but as a kid if there was any mash left over from the previous day’s dinner, my mum would flatten it and fry it after the bacon or/and sausages. I don’t think she added anything other than a bit of salt (it was the good ole days of Trex). Happy memories!

I gather there’s no messing about with the portions either.i had a poor Full English at a golf club the other week. You know, low quality bacon, lips and trash sausage, soggy toast and tepid beans served in a p£ssy little ramekin dish. The mushroom and shrivelled tomato was the highlight!

My mate was telling me that in NI you don’t so much need a plate as a meat serving platter because they certainly don’t leave you hungry!

It depends what you fry it in.
That BBC recipe suggests a neutral oil which is ok. I fry mine in olive oil.

It also suggests 40g of Lard for just 2 slices of white bread.
Paramedics on stand-by.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Does anyone know whether Blackpool is actually seen as the most prestigious ballroom venue or is it just the bbc overhyping it?

Most golf clubs are struggling to make money on catering these days as they aren't doing enough volume so the solution is usually to cut costs.
