Fried Bread 10:24 - Nov 17 with 4741 viewsChurchman

Mrs C was watching Strictly last night (zzz) and it was in Blackpool. Now Blackpool is just about the biggest sh£thole I’ve ever been to. Makes Yarmouth look like Venice. But when I went with my cricket chums last year there was a consolation.

We had a full English in a cafe and it was monster. Good quality bacon, sausages, beans, mushrooms, hash browns, black pudding (yuck), tomato, eggs, toast, tea and to make it even better …..a pile of fried bread.

I hadn’t had it in many years and there it sat, golden and glistening in the morning light. Perfectly fried, it was stonkingly good.

Now I know it’s a heart attack in bread form. In fact all of that breakfast was created by Satan, but dear me it wasn’t half good.

What is the forum’s view on the good old FB? The proper original version of thick sliced white bread fried in oil or lard until golden brown.

I’ve never heard the term Boxty before. Had to look it up and yes perleeese! Definitely up for that!

https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/161679/irish-boxty/

Not quite the same, but as a kid if there was any mash left over from the previous day’s dinner, my mum would flatten it and fry it after the bacon or/and sausages. I don’t think she added anything other than a bit of salt (it was the good ole days of Trex). Happy memories!

I remember the mother knocking up something similar with left over mash. Also love a good bubble an squeak from any left over potatoes and greens.

My mum made those but added grated onion and called it a potato cake.

Most golf clubs are struggling to make money on catering these days as they aren't doing enough volume so the solution is usually to cut costs.

They may as well cut catering all together because a poor value rubbish quality breakfast or any meal and you don’t bother again. Mind you, many golf clubs are going to the wall anyway as the owners can make a bundle selling to developers to throw up rubbish houses, now that planning laws have been basically binned..

Like you I haven't had it in years, but yes, delicious when fried just right.

Surprised you say black (or indeed white) pudding's yuck though. Love it, especially a good quality one like Clonakilty.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Fried white bread with a fried egg on top is heaven.

Is absolutely the correct answer, nothing else comes close to this heavenly serving suggestion!

Tried it at school and it was horrific. Mind you most catering was. I obviously know what it is and have avoided it since. Given I’ll try virtually anything (and have) I really ought to give it another go.

One thing I’ll avoid like the plague is Bavarian White Sausage. See attached. Truly appalling in every way and as guests we were obliged to eat them on more than one occasion.

Love fried bread but it's very rich, more than a half slice is a bit much.

Anyone who likes fried bread based food should give the following a try if they see them on a menu:
Puri/Poori (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh)
Doubles (Trinidad)
Bokits (Guadeloupe, Martinique)

On topic, it is a crying shame that hotels now offer greasy potato waffles, rather than fried bread.

In response, I often make potato cakes for breakfast; leftover cottage pie can be repurposed into a perfect breakfast that way.

reminds me of the old Little Chef Olympic breakfast

That's almost there, just missing black and white pudding, fried bread, boxty, a couple more sausages, and possibly a hash brown or 2.
But it's a fair attempt

I gather there’s no messing about with the portions either.i had a poor Full English at a golf club the other week. You know, low quality bacon, lips and trash sausage, soggy toast and tepid beans served in a p£ssy little ramekin dish. The mushroom and shrivelled tomato was the highlight!

My mate was telling me that in NI you don’t so much need a plate as a meat serving platter because they certainly don’t leave you hungry!

This is a genuine thing near me. Uplands Diner’s ‘The Beast’ in Swansea. Some share, some don’t. I wouldn’t say the quality is there, but you don’t leave hungry.

No white pudding! That's criminal.
Also don't like the look of the sausages and looks like I'd have to supply my own boxty

You are talking Somerset here. You have to make allowances. They still view the fork as new technology.

Often had fried mash at breakfast as a child. Or previously boiled potatoes sliced and fried.

Still do both those things myself.

Yep, boiled pots too and if there were any roast potatoes my mum would mash them and fry them. Chucking food out was frowned upon. Luckily things like that, bubble and squeak etc I really liked.

There is an hotel we stay at in Letterkenny, Co Donegal that has a bottle of whisky by the porridge at breakfast time.

I once asked why Bells and the response, with a wink, was you wouldn’t want to drink it.

I don’t think that’d stop a couple of acquaintances of mine. I saw them once do a full English and five pints of Guinness before 9am and then they went out on the golf course in a cart loaded with beer and wine. They still played better than I did!!

My nana could knock up a fine plate of champ. Mash, scallions, buttermilk, more butter. Couple or three rashers and a wheaten farl washed down with weapons grade tea. I'm surprised I'm still here.

plus with baked beans on top.

Upvoted, as baked beans are the best way to stick together the shards of fried bread when it shatters and make for a good texture combination

I'm a fan, but not something I'd make at home because:
a) you need a deep fat fryer to do it properly, and we don't have one
b) too much mess and clearing up for one element of a fry up if you don't have a deep fat fryer
c) best saved for when you go out for breakfast (which isn't that often, so I don't end up fat as a house)
