Getting Axel to sign a contract extension, would be as important to us as any new signing in the January window. The man is a quality Premier League defender, who plays that RB->RCB role perfectly for us, and would be a massive loss were he to move on. He can start talking to others, officially, about a free transfer in January, but I would like to think that he has some loyalty to us having been given a chance, and plenty of patience, last season before re-emerging into the collosus we have back playing again.
He would be a £25m player, if he had 2 years left on a contract, so to lose him for nothing would be a huge disappointment, not to mention trying to replace him.
Hopefully McKenna can convince him to stay on after helping him get back to his best, but his performances have not gone unnoticed, and neither will his contract situation have.

Would be massive if he did, but if I were him I’d probably play it out from here and see what I could get in the summer as will be plenty of suitors if he continues on in this form.

You never know, he may well enjoy being here! His teammates, the manager, the trajectory/story we're on, his family. He's been at the biggest club in the land, maybe what he has here is more enjoyable.

Let's hope so. We took a bit of a gamble on him fitness-wise but it's worked out brilliantly.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Possibly but that's a big gamble with his injury record and he's probably enjoying his football now as much as he ever had or at least since short injury free spell at united when coming through.

I imagine he might sign but have a easier release clause if relegated.

Yes, this seems most likely to me. He’s clearly a PL quality player, presumably still on a hefty contract.

I wouldn’t sign either if I were him.

I expect both parties will be waiting to see which league we'll be in.

I think he'll be off unfortunately.

Leif signed a contract extension and there is no way he'll be returning to the Championship, so I can only assume Axel has rejected our contract offer.

I wouldn't be surprised if he signs a pre-contract agreement and goes abroad.

Given his reputation as a young player, his contract situation and his current form/fitness, I'd bet there are clubs all over Europe making polite inquiries to his agent.

You'll assume with his history, he will be after a long contract. Can't see him signing any short term extension with us.

Where we are at the end of season will ultimately make that decision for the club.

By which time hopefully Johnson will have been "McKenna'd" into a very decent player.

There's also the factor of him being pretty much the guaranteed first-choice starter at Town, whereas that might not be the case at somewhere like Chelsea, even tho they can offer better wages.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

It always amazes me how people can make blanket statements like this. You don't know anything about the man, how he's feeling or his motivations.

Look at Calvin Phillips. Before he came here we were amazed we'd even be able to get someone of his calibre. Now he's talking about a weight being lifted coming here.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.
