A nice tight defence! 13:18 - Dec 17 with 1698 views | NthQldITFC | Just reading the Wolves stories, bemoaning their slack defence, it's notable that we have a much tighter defence than the rest of the bottom four, also better than West Ham and Brentford and only three goals worse off than Villa and only five more than Citeh. Our superb defence and keeper are the frontline (or backline maybe?), but the whole team deserves so much credit for the way it has coped with the opponents' attacking threat at this level, and they've been particularly tight over the last seven games or so since Brentford.

A nice tight defence! on 13:35 - Dec 17 with 1583 views | homer_123 | So, for me, this is difficulty we now face. KM has indeed 'shored' us up, we are more tight than we were at the start of the season. This is coming at a cost though. As you would expect, we become less of a force going forward and are therefore not creating quite as many chances or quite the quality. Therefore, it's a trade off until we improve/ develop the squad. We can see that the likes of Burns et al are being asked to just be a touch more defensive minded than last season, for example. Even Davis isn't quite getting forward. For me, this is as much 'instructional' from KM than the oppo being that much better. At this time, it's imperative that we are more clinical. By the way, I don't have a problem with this approach from KM!

We're not gonna win games conceding 4 like we did against West Ham and Brentford

At last check, we've got the second best record for conceding setpiece goals this season, with only 2 conceded. Not bad compare to the 20 or so Wolves have conceded!

I think you're right, but I also think that we are acclimatised to the PL now and we know when to push on and go a bit gung ho and when to absorb a bit. The adrenalin rush against Liverpool was so impressive until we ran out of steam, and that would have been the case on a game by game basis and on the season as a whole basis too (with injuries and fatigue), but I think we're learning how to measure our efforts now, and how to do it a little differently from game to game to pick up points at opportune moments. As you say, a little more clinicalness in our attacking will help, whether from the continued improvement of current players, or from recruitment in January.

Can we be much more clinical though. Sky Sports had a piece today about how wasteful Bournemouth have been after their record for most amount of shots they've made in a PL match. This was an xG chart, and on that chart we were pretty much as close to where we should be for the amount of goals we have scored compared to our xG. I think it's unfair and unrealistic to expect our team to outscore our xG, it happens but it's not usually sustainable. We need to find a way to increase the amount of chances we're creating, which is very difficult in the PL, even more so when you're light up top and carrying a lot of injuries to your better players. I think the only way to improve all this is to get any transfers bang on in Jan and keep everything crossed that this injury crisis passes soon and we have more luck on that front for the rest of the season. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
A nice tight defence! on 14:29 - Dec 17 with 1254 views | Bellevue_Blue | I agree, can't help but feel like we would be even stronger had Tuanzebe been playing. The first goal for B'mouth, and only goals for Wolves and Palace have all started down the right hand side of our defence.

Our right is doing it's best but a massive downgraded on tuanzebe and obgene, Sadly their injuries may come down to us staying up and going down, Would have been a lot easier and more productive with them, The Clarke/ Johnson burns/ Hutchinson have just got to hang in there, give us a shot,

100% and I'm not sure we can afford defensive reinforcements in Jan! It's really just the pace isn't it. Hopefully Clarke/ Johnson can improve continue to improve positionally. Next up Gordon, Neto & Martinelli!!

if we stick to the same formation, i don't think we can have omari on the right without axel. johnson and burns give far more support to their full back, admittedly leading to less creativity up top (though burns' crossing did seem improved on saturday)

Potentially why morsy esp on 65 minutes needs another player to rotate with.. We need a two cajustes in that midfield. Two who can defend but can also get the ball forward. We then need a Davis type engine on the right hand side of midfield who can help defensively but get forward quickly too. We are imo 4 quality players away from having enough to stay up. Just 4. Then we go shopping in summer for that next level. But 4 players will keep us up.. any funds we have will keep spending. This current squad keeps us competitive bit we lose so much around 60 minutes in games. That final 30 is so important. We need to be able to rotate morsy that is key We need to be able to rotate rw. That is key We need to rotate striker that is key We need to rotate lb. That is key
