If guns are banned so must cars. 01:39 - Jan 2 with 1789 views | Mercian | After all cars have been used in two recent deadly terrorist attacks. I want to make it clear this is not my view but the views of a number of American gun nuts who have posted on various forums in the last 24 hours with "Our prayers go out to them" BS included.

If guns are banned so must cars. on 09:39 - Jan 2 with 1500 views | Guthrum | There is some merit in their contention that shootings (particularly school massacres) are down to mental health problems. But they are then unprepared to do anything about it, as that would involve universal funded healthcare, which is practically communism and might involve well-off people having to pay for the poor and the government knowing who you are.

Trouble with their argument is that the obvious counter is that if there was less access to guns then people with mental health issues wouldn't be able to commit the massacres in the first place. You are of course correct about the lack of funded healthcare. SB

Quite. Even at the level of gun security in the home. I can see why it wouldn't help the feeling of personal security to have all weapons locked away in secure cabinets. But to keep a loaded, cocked firearm with the safety not even engaged* lying around the place is just asking for trouble. As can be judged by the number of accidental shootings - frequently involving children - which occur. If guns are banned so must cars. on 11:50 - Jan 2 with 1289 views | MattinLondon | The main difference being that guns are designed to kill - very few will buy a gun that will just injure. A car is designed to get you from A to B, not to kill.
If guns are banned so must cars. on 13:46 - Jan 2 with 1149 views | stonojnr | well you might think its a bad take from them, but in the UK alone cars kill roughly 4 people per day every day, in the US its even worse nearly 100 people per day die I kind of think if it were guns killing that many people every day, we'd try and do something about it.

100 Americans are killed per day in car related accidents? I thought most roads over there were much bigger than ours. Is that a misconception or is driving over there quite a low standard? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It is, though in the US the standard answer to that is 'a legitimate and necessary tool for hunting and self-defence' blah blah blah. I've often thought cars should be viewed somewhere between guns and cigarettes in terms of there being extremely strong reasons to limit their use. They are extremely dangerous tools which are often necessary and always polluting (even the green ones in terms of construction). This is why a future of electric cars doesn't fill me with any sort of joy - some people will always need cars if they are in far off places but for anyone in an urban/suburban setting the priority surely should be normalised mass transit plus some sort of hire scheme for exceptional tasks like moving big stuff plus making supermarket deliveries very much the norm.

There was an Economist article about this last year - the biggest factor is the size of their vehicles (particularly SUV’s). Whilst it MIGHT provide some protection for occupants, the mass makes it less survivable for other road users and pedestrians in a collision.

Earlier this year there was talk of banning SUVs as well as those godawful massive truck things from roads by schools. Not sure how enforceable that’ll be considering a lot of families now own SUVs.
