Fine margins and sliding doors etc 17:10 - Jan 6 with 3883 viewsIllinoisblue

Reading a long piece in the Southampton paper about their decline and how close they were to signing Delap in the summer. Fee agreed but came here instead.

Horrific to imagine what might have been if we hadn’t got him.

Would we have signed the injured Broja to be backed up by the injured Hirst to be backed up by the injured AAH…. Shudder

AAH would've started 20 games by now, have 14 goals and we'd be 11th.

Def info.

Was it MA that implied (perhaps tongue in cheek) that a facetime with the boy Sheeran swung the Delap deal in our favour? I'm sure there were bigger factors, but shouldn't underestimate the little things like having a 'relevant' global superstar like Ed Sheeran. This generation of footballers will have grown up with his music, as will their siblings / friends / families / partners etc. I can see why players would've looked in at what our squad have done over the past few years and the experiences they've had and really want to be a part of it, for various reasons. Its natural.

Plus, and I think this is an important consideration, Russell Martin is a fooking tool.

He's no Chris Sutton, that's for sure.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

There is that. I can't deny there's a part of me that respects him for going to bed with Lucy Pinder every night though.

I don't think it was ever confirmed but apparently the call happened the day before we signed Sammy.

Interesting as I don't think there was ever the need to convince Sammy to come but Delap had the choice. As other posters have said, after watching RM football and speaking to him surely he must have been convinced by KMc.

Think it was Sky Sports that reported it wrong.

Ashton said a few days before it was picked up by the media that it was Delap n
