Travel Insurance companies are tw@ts... 13:58 - Jan 16 with 1804 views | ElderGrizzly | Short version: Heading to a conference next week to speak, conference has been cancelled on advice/direction of Abu Dhabi Government due to security threat against it. Travel insurance company said, as there hasn't been an actual attack within 50 miles already, there is no cover for any cancellation. Also there is not(and won't be) FCDO advice as it's a local matter. So if i'd gone and been attacked, that's all ok and you can pop back early for a full refund, but if you take the advice of the local Government then nope... Not my money, but just shows what utter shysters they are!

I didn't deal with the insurance policy, as it's a corporate one. Given my previous employment, I was just intrigued at their logic of threat vs actual attack as it appeared I also wouldn't have been covered if I'd gone knowing of the threat and then had an incident there. Indeed, it's surprising this sort of thing isn't included as standard in the case of commercial travel insurance, given that attending conferences and the like is presumably very common. Indeed, maybe they are just trying to fob off claims. [Post edited 16 Jan 14:31]

I travel a lot for my job, so I might mention it in the context of a reply. In the same way you mention your love for narcissistic fascism on a regular basis... | | | | Login to get fewer ads

There is no reason for you not to travel to your destination (Abu Dhabi), it’s just the thing that you were travelling there for that you can’t do. It’s the work equivalent of booking a weekend in Barcelona intending to go and watch a game, the game being postponed and then cancelling the whole trip and expecting to be covered As someone above has said if your work wants people to be covered when meetings/conferences etc are cancelled they should have arranged a policy that does that. Presumably they didn’t as it would be considerably more expensive

Travel Insurance companies are tw@ts... on 17:12 - Jan 16 with 908 views | Swansea_Blue | I’ve always viewed insurance as legalised scamming in the main. They play off people’s fears and then use every trick possible to avoid paying out. I do get it for family overseas travel purely for the medical cover, but swerve it for anything else unless required by law. Same with breakdown insurance, extended warranties, etc. I reckon I’ve saved tens of thousands over the years, so I’m prepared to take it on the chin if I need towing off the motorway or if the fridge breaks. I doubt we’d be covered in a situation like yours. We used to struggle getting it at in my first job as we’d often go to places that were a bit dodgy re terrorist activity.
