Given we have relatively balanced trade, I hope Starmer knows what he is doing taking last nights steel smack in the face from Trump with a bend of the knee.
Should we have be standing against America and slap reciprocal tariffs on them? What are peoples’ views? Yes or no?
The attached pick and mix list shows there is plenty to choose from. I’d go for anything companies can easily source from elsewhere. There’s plenty to choose from but I’d start with 500% on Teslas just to annoy Musk.

Most of the Tesla’s sold in Europe are made in Germany, not the US.
Given it’s our largest single country export market, and one of the few where we have a trade surplus it would be pretty self defeating.
Any Trump tariffs won’t last long, we should ride it out - he’ll come under huge pressure from US industry who see export profits fall, and the populace as inflation rises (est cost of Trump tariffs is $1,600 per household). Ironically all he’s done is boost the economy of Germany at the cost of US growth. Anyone with a DAX tracker has seen it hit a record high since the orange tool started implementing trade barriers. Cheers Don.

Agree on tariffs, reacting just further fuels the situation.
As for Teslas, that should be a personal choice to boycott rather than driven by tariffs.

there is no point getting arsy over one small part of our exports that represents only one third of a percent of the total exports to the US. Relatively small beer.

I disagree. Whilst there is some merit in appeasing trump, we should be standing with the EU and Canada. By bending over we are setting precedents and expectations.

It’s a good point. While I accept that caution is probably the best (non) move at the moment, the sheer fact remains unprovoked, Trump is harming an industry of ours and technically putting jobs here at risk. For no good reason than he thinks he can.
More to the point, we really should be aligning with Europe and Canada. We cannot hide, grovel and appease forever because Trump won’t stop. Just like his best mate in Moscow, appeasement won’t work.
I know Starmer by nature is cautious. There’s nothing wrong in that and fully accept the wait argument, but at some stage he will have to get off the fence. It’s not as if anything good will come out of America and nor will we be left alone.
Any trade deal will be about pillaging this country just as he’s looking to do everywhere else bar ally and friend Russia. Tax Hershey bars! B awful things anyway.

It’s not really bending over - it’s harming the US economy and markets more than anyone else, in fact arguably to Europe’s gain as other markets pivot away from trading with the US. The UK entering in a trade war with the largest and richest market in the world is a futile exercise (not so much were we in the Single Market and had some scale). Worth noting that despite Trump beiing an enormous helmet, some of the hyperbole is ridiculous. People are happy to buy Chinese goods whilst they commit human rights abuses against Uyghurs, Tibetans, and the people of HK.
There’s optics too - if the UK/EU get involved in a trade war Trump can blame external factors (we know it’s ridiculous but his supporters will lap it up) when the cost of living spikes in the US. If we don’t reciprocate then it becomes very hard for him to blame anyone but himself.

Almost $5bn of pharmaceuticals on that list could prove very damaging to the NHS, which is already struggling badly to fulfill prescriptions for some medications currently.
We should charge 5%+ on the amounts made by Meta, X and Google on the revenue earned in the UK. We should also grant them licences to work in the UK and revoke them when they don't remove extreme content or fail to give information on request.

He’s already causing job losses in the USA - surely job creation and improved standards of living was a core reason for many of them voting for him in the first place.
Internal revolt is what’s most likely to bring him down I’d have thought.

What the orange gibbon blames is irrelevant. He will blame anything and anyone and truth will form no part of it. MAGA is about plundering the world to America’s sole advantage.
Ok, no real change there but the lies, dishonesty and naked aggression towards former friends and partners is there for all to see. He took the gloves off, betrayed and will continue to betray. America should never be trusted again in anything. Ever.
Yes, China is what it is. But there is a certain strange transparency in that disgusting country that isn’t in America, until now. Having thought about it over a long, lazy, wine adorned lunch, I’m in favour of facing down America. Trump: you slap tariffs on and we will do the same, whatever the cost. Let’s mirror what Canada and EU are doing. If China tries dumping, slap tariffs on them too.
Stand with Canada and Europe, Japan along with much of the free world. America votes in the UN with Russia and N Korea. That’s their friends and partners now. They made the decision. No going back. I’ve seen nothing in the past two months but hostility and rudeness to all but those dictator states. Neither EU or Canada are perfect, but they are in the right on this.
If US wants to play hardball on anything including military, get on with it and do it. It’s going to do it anyway. Let’s just see where America stands now. I get that many Americans don’t support that maniac. Maybe they do, maybe they don’t. Lets find out.
Time to act Sir Kier, because taking it up the wizzway with a ready smile won’t work. It’ll only encourage Orangyoaf more. And never forget that in US’ 224 year history, they’ve been an enemy for a lot longer than they’ve been a friend.

We should also get Amazon, Starbucks and others to pay their fair share of tax
It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Didn't Trump have his greedy eyes on the NHS prescription business when he was in power last time?
