But then I’m loving the supporters. Cape Verde’s (not the best place I’ve ever visited) went nuts, so brilliant. So to utterly contradict myself, yeah, include the ‘smaller nations’. Why not.

The Saudis traditionally are one of the strongest Asian teams but this iteration is poor and struggled to even get there….Qatar the same .. World Cup hosted very rapidly back to obscurity with their Brazilian players. [Post edited 22 Jun 8:57]

It's like the international version of our January FA Cup 3rd round

I don't think it is complacency at all. I think it is the fact that a lot of these lesser teams are very well coached with some decent players in them. It is happening far too often for it to be the bigger teams being complacent.

The complacency was a reference to Uruguay's casual, lazy passing across their own box after they'd gone 2-1 up - they'd obviously thought they had the game won already. Yes CV were certainly well-coached & have quality players, that's clear. Good man changing your mind & sticking yer hand up though.

Thanks. I didn't watch the match so didn't see that. Thanks for explaining the reasoning behind your comment. Having said that, keeping possession when ahead is a good tactic against a team you know are good. Of course, if it is lazy passing and they conceded the possession too easily that is poor, though.

It was that lazy passing which led to CV's equaliser - quick thinking & reacting Varela nipped in & stole it, lovely composure in scoring (tho looking just now at the replay, it was well outside the box, but anyway ..) https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/fo

Thanks for sharing. That's a crazy pass from the wide defender and I am not sure what the keeper was doing being that far out anyway! It looks like some low quality football from Uruguay rather than simply lazy passing but I guess I would have to watch the whole play from when they took the lead to see it in all its context. I wouldn't go so far as to say it is that good from the attacker. The ball was played blind into no-man's land allowing him to get to it before anyone else. The keeper was already outside his box so had to close him down well outside it which left the attacker with an open goal from 30 yards. I think that even I would probably be able to score that (though might still miss!)
