It seems very troubling on face value, but there is some different context. He has spent a significant period (8 years) tackling extremism as a reformed character (in the words of others).

I dont think that wanting a different approach to climate change from Ed Milliband's "lets close businesses and destroy livelihoods" ideas is excessive.
It would all be fine and I would accept the pain if it was going to work, but it is n't.
With the rest of the world piling in on coal and oil what ever our little country does will make no difference.

It's a definite no from me. The crimes he commited and his former beliefs should bar him from representing any political party and holding public office.
It's admirable that he has renounced his former disgusting views and I understand he has been certified by the Home Office to train police officers on antisemitism and on countering extremism. If he is genuinely remorseful, and I don't have any reason to believe that he isn't, then this is the path he should follo if he wants to contribute to society in some way. |  |

Mathew Collins is a former member of the NF, BNP and Combat 18. He has renounced his views and is now a researcher and Head of Intelligence for Hop Not Hate. So people can turn their lives around and renounce their past. But there is much good that Joshua Bonehill-Paine without holding public office. | |

I think he made the right call.
I’ve found this case fascinating. It’s raised some really interesting questions and points around understanding how depraved some extremists are, how to tackle online extremism, the value of rehabilitation, society’s treatment of ex-offenders, the role of ex-offenders in education, the role of victims in the justice process, standards required for public office, etc. | |
