Palacios our best player tonight. Very neat and tidy. Thought Leif and Emersonn had good games as well.
Enciso tried and was lively but not things just didn’t quite come off how they did against Sunderland but that’ll happen with players like him who are constantly looking to buzz around and create magic.
Jacob Greaves.. I still fail to see it at all. That first 15/20 mins, he and Diop were a shambles. Particularly Greaves. Three times the same run from Isak caused us trouble. Naive defending. I thought burgess was a better actual defender than him two years ago and Kipre last season. Yes greaves is wiling to drive forward with the ball but is that enough to make up for consistently sh*te defending.
Scherpen.. should have saved the first one i thought. Possibly got a bid lost for the second one. Kept a lot of decent strikes out first half though. He is going to drive me insane if he spends every game when we’re behind standing with the ball at his feet though. That’ll drive me crackers and he did it again tonight. At 87 minutes when 2-0 down, why is he taking 25 seconds to pass it 20 yards to his right.
Thought the scousers eased off after half an hour. The press from them first 15 minutes was better than anything I’ve seen from a team at our place. Very impressive. I did fear after 20 minutes that it was going to be like that Man City game two years ago at our place where we could’ve conceded ten but I thought actually we were ok for large parts. But not more or less. Liverpool were comfortable.
All in all, we were much improved second half and there’s a good spine in Lukic, Palacios and Enciso to build round but defensively I’m worried. And giving teams like Liverpool a two goal head start inside 8 minutes is the sort of thing that will relegate us. But ultimately it isn’t going to be games against teams capable of bringing on a 125m player off the bench that will decide our fate. It’ll be the home games against your Sunderlands and Fulham. But we could do with something next week at Palace. We move on. |  |

Palacios is clearly class, a few more matches to get up to speed and he'll be running things for us and feeding sharp passes into Enciso.
Really liking Emersonn as well, really likes to bully the back lines.
I think overall we were decent in the second half, there is definitely the elements there to build a decent side and with a bit more time we could see something quite good.
I think if most were asked if we would take 3 points from Sunderland, Man Utd and Liverpool whilst still bedding in the side they would have taken it.

I would say your final paragraph is about right. There was a complete gulf in class and it showed that they could spend half as much on one player as we have spent on the whole squad and still afford to have that player as a sub.
Ultimately, any points against the top 6 are going to be hard-fought bonuses. To have a point per game after matches that include Man Utd and Liverpool isn't a bad start and we definitely would have taken that before the start of the season. It is important we get points against those that won't be in the top 6. |  |

I was astonished at how we started that game. Really poor management imo.
Far too open, gave no respect to Liverpool who have world class attackers and paid the price. We didn't learn from United last week, after conceding a goal to put you down, you have to relax and regroup and stay in the game. The defensive shape is certainly a concern to me.

Moving O'Shea to centre back makes sense to me.
Whether that's by dropping Greaves and bringing Ouattara in as right back or changing the shape generally I am less convinced by. I think we need the midfield and attacking numbers so 3 (or 5) at the back might not benefit us that much. Effectively it might be equivalent to dropping one of the attacking players or midfielders for Ouattara. | |

Excellent post. You can see, very wisely, that game over after eight minutes. Anything after that is irrelevant as Liverpool then coasted to what may be their easiest win of the season.

Nobody was prepared to give them a kick up the arse, we didn’t hunt in packs until about 75 mins. Just sat off and shat ourselves in their headlights.

Indeed to me early doors tonight it felt like we gave them too much respect.
At one point we lost the 50/50 header, to which we then lost the second ball. Then the third. Then the fourth. And then allowed their lad with the stupid hair and the scrabble highscoring name to take it down and ping it out wide to Munoz while O’Shea stood off and let him run 35 yards further without getting a tackle in. Now that is bad at any point. But that was inside the first 2 minutes. Too much respect. | |

I suspect his concern is that OS provides more solid cover for Fatawu on the RW particularly against teams like Liverpool. Outtara would doubtless provide a more attacking threat but is he as good defensively when you’ve got Fatawu giving the ball away in front of you. And providing relatively little cover. | | | |
