| Anyone surprised by our tactics these last 2 games? 14:56 - Sep 5 with 1378 views | burnbudgiesburn | Firstly, i'm still positive about the potential for staying up - I think mostly due to the increased quality of player we have compared to 2 yrs ago. I must admit i'm surprised by the way we've been fairly open against United / Liverpool. When GON talked about picking and choosing games to be adaptable in - I thought we would 100% attack games like Sunderland but be much more low blocky against the latter two sides. So, I am definitely surprised a bit by how we set up. I expected us to be much more defensive and to sit in for these games. | | | | |
| Anyone surprised by our tactics these last 2 games? on 15:04 - Sep 5 with 1332 views | Garv | I think it's there for everyone to see, but we're still on something of a high after Sunderland so its not really being voiced much, only by a few. Not to say we should all be downbeat, but it's a fair debate. We did play generally well last night but the game was done. Let's be honest it could have been another Newcastle or Arsenal from last time, maybe even City who really spanked us. Liverpool were frightening. We've got good attacking options, I'd love to know what other clubs came in for Enciso - surely a few others. He's class. Fatawu will definitely have moments, Palacios looks very good and Lukic looks like he'll take games by the scruff. But we're miles off Liverpool and we should have paid them a bit more respect. There was so much space in the middle of the pitch it was ridiculous. | |

| Anyone surprised by our tactics these last 2 games? on 17:25 - Sep 5 with 1057 views | Adams | Very surprised. I didn't expect to be playing such a high line against these teams, as it obviously wouldn't work very well. Our defenders aren't the most mobile, fast, or very good one on one defenders, so they aren't suited to playing like that. It doesn't look like our keeper is good at playing as a sweeper either. They would be much more comfortable a little bit deeper. We have lots of good, fast and direct forwards. On paper, we look like a team that could be really good sitting back and hitting on the counter and picking our moments to pass out rather than doing what we are currently doing. Our defenders aren't great technically (as well as some other players). Passing out as much as we do looks awkward, and we will continue to give the ball away in dangerous areas. Our current tactics highlight our weakness far too much. We aren't good enough to play these teams at their own game. We will see if we're good enough to play like this against the Evertons and Palace of the world. [Post edited 5 Sep 17:28]

I was concerned when heard we had not trained or prepared to play 5 at the back at any time in pre season or since. We need to be much more pragmatic against the top teams. Sitting in denying them space and hitting them on the break is the only way we may pick up some points. Trying to go head to head with them is likely to lead to no points and the danger of being embarrassed. We have played well at times and have shown we are capable offensively but we need to leave the more expansively stuff to those teams who are closer to us ability wise.

We have a lot of attacking options to hurt opponents on the break. We have let more goals in than most other teams. Opponents will now see uor defence as a weak spot and go after it. If he doesn't recognise that and fix it we are going down. There will be no excuses if we don't pick up points in the next 2 matches.

Its easy to say make us hard to beat. But there are different ways of doing it Enciso. Maeda. Fatawu etc werent purchased to sit deep and counter

Why not, they are all hard working in the press, and rapid on the counter. Weirdly the setup against Sunderland seemed more contain+counter than it did against Liverpool. GON seems to have gone for continuity from KM in terms of style.

I understand the attraction of the high line , compressing the space and denying the opposition room to work, but it is certainly high risk against a team with pace like Liverpool who can play clever balls in and interplay so well. Suicide in fact. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

You could argue that they are actually better players on the counter when there is space to run into. Three of our goals have come from winning the ball and punishing them straight away. We haven't looked that good when the other team is set in a good defensive shape. They should have been signed in part to sit back a bit and counter against the better teams. agree , we seem wedded to 4-2-3-1, perhaps it is in the manager's contract ! I had hoped for a formation change asin the Premier, our midfield are so exposed against better teams or teams playing 3 midfielders. Despite us clearly trying to strengthen that area.

Personally i felt v sunderland it was a mix of styles We lead them to pass to their left and when they did we pressed. Many times we won the ball deep in sunderlands half. Likewise there were times as you say we allowed them to venture forward.. we intercepted then attacked. We didnt however sit with 5 at the back and then a flat 4 Its a fluid 4 2 3 1 ala mcknenna. With a mix of town of league 1 and champ in it in style imo. V utd upto the slip we played with confidence. High line away to utd. We were doing really well and playing some lovely football. Liverpool opening spell was the the first time we seemed a bit lost from kickoff. We need to fix that.

Our next run of games are so important. I do wonder whether GON has taken a view that it is more important in the context of our season that we have our primary playing “mode” bedded in for those upcoming games than it was mixing things up for the Liverpool game. These guys really ought to be able to play more than one system, but if we get our forward thinking system working well by the time we play Palace, Fulham etc we should take more points than scraping the odd point from a big side. Could be nonsense, and it is a bit defeatist saying we can’t have that flexibility, and it is not to say that there aren’t some individual elements for players to work on as well, but that is how I would rationalise it.
| Anyone surprised by our tactics these last 2 games? on 08:59 - Sep 6 with 258 views | NthQldITFC | I'd guess it was a coin toss as to whether to go ballsy against both of these early in the season with neither playing very well beforehand. Against Man U you could argue that it paid off well until we got unlucky, and not changing a bit earlier was probably a small mistake which happened to have bigger consequences, so I'm not bothered about that game at all. Liverpool, at home, with them not in the best form... If we'd got a point or a narrow defeat at Utd, I could have understood us going ballsy for Liverpool, but I was surprised we didn't do a Hull against them from the start. The downside of setting up over-defensively for these games of course is that you carry that into the games you want to go hard in. Three points from three games and integrating the squad still - as GO says, each game is isolated; we're in a decent place to attack the next game from here. | |

| Anyone surprised by our tactics these last 2 games? on 09:17 - Sep 6 with 191 views | jas0999 | Yes. But the more fundamental concern is we don’t have a strong enough defence to play that way. We were exposed and nowhere near good enough at the back to stop them. I think we need to look at Hull. I know it’s just three games, but no goals conceded and they have played two top sides. The keeper they signed looks good as well. | | | |
| Anyone surprised by our tactics these last 2 games? on 09:26 - Sep 6 with 163 views | portmanking | Yes, the glaring lack of pragmatism is a serious concern. GON said he would set the team up based on each opponent which sounded great. I've seen no such thing this far. Almost as if he's turning out to be the sound bite manager Wolves fans said he was... I live in hope that isn't the case and we turn in a sensible, controlled display at Selhurst Park. | | | |
| Anyone surprised by our tactics these last 2 games? on 09:33 - Sep 6 with 149 views | PioneerBlue | I dont think flexibility and adaptability should be take so literally. Im certain there is no team at this level that is adjusting game by game, small or large, obvious or no so obvious. In our case it is probably as much about the period of the season as it is the opposition. In my view your are under less pressure to establish your attacking principles and capability early in the season, you might catch a team or two before they have settled, variability in teams play is probably at its highest. If you get some early goals in games or points on the board then you have something worth defending. I see to an extent Hull have taken a different approach but then they have their six points to defend over first several games. If we fail to secure many/any points in the next 1-2 it will be interesting how we approach the following games. I think to an extent this is how we got caught last time. Started with the attempt to score and win some games, came unstuck quickly against high capability opposition then tried to recover points in mid season then never really took off then by the later period we just had to defend to retain some humility. We do actually have to reach take off velocity this time. Autumn is really important. | |
