McAuley Player of the Year
McAuley Player of the Year
Sunday, 2nd May 2010 22:06

Central defender Gareth McAuley was named the Official Supporters Club Player of the Year at tonight's Player Awards Evening at the Greshams Sports and Social Club.

The Northern Irishman finished well ahead of central defensive partner Damien Delaney in second, who was only a handful of votes ahead of third-placed Jack Colback, who won the Players’ Player of the Year last week.

McAuley also retained the Ashley Cushion Away Match Passport Holders Player of the Year, having won it in its inaugural season last year. Ashley was an Away Match Passport holder who died last season and the former Lincoln and Leicester player received the award from his wife Mary Anne.

The Dale Roberts Trophy for the Academy Player of the Year was won by red-carded debutant Tom Eastman.

A good starting point for next season, Mcauley and Delaney. The opposition will not pass.

Although my vote went to Delenay - I feel this was a well deserved award for McAuley. well done.

Spot on - he had a mare of a start to the season but came back strong and forged what I think is a fantastic partnership with Delaney, one of the v v few highlights of the season.

For the second season in a row he started vert poorly but finished very strong. Maybe the understanding with his other centre back was missing until Delaney moved there. Whatever he was my second choice behind Jaime peters but no problems with result. I think the loss of the captains arm band helped as he is no inspirational leader,( have we actually got one?) I hope he has a better start to next season, could make a big difference.

Was Macauley one of the alleged players at the start of the season who "would never play for the team again"? If so was it an inspired kick up the backside by keane, or a terrible lack of knowledge of his real abilities?

As for delaney, he would have missed out on the award cos of his shocking start to the season at left back.

Stinki well remembered he was indeed told he could go find another club by that idiot Keane! Another great example of his bully boy tactics as a manager, you could say a 'kick up the arse' worked but it certainly hasn't done the team any good. Poor Poor season and he should be sacked!!

I seem to remember certain posters on this site describing him as 'McAwful' as the beginning of the season. You know who you are...

Another player who came very good despite the hate campaign against on him on here. Lets hope Priskin will be the same because he has had the same treatment both on here and at games.

Just goes to show how a player can improve once supporters get off their backs. Hopefully if any of you dickheads who boo their own players are reading this, you can learn a lesson for next season? Thats if you can actually read of course!

Well done to Gareth .
My Apologies for slagging you off last season and the start of this season.
He must be the kind of man who takes critisism in the right way ( not just from me)
Both Gareth and Damien received pelters from all quarters and have come through as our shining lights of the season.
With Murphy in goal Gareth and Damien at the back we have a strong foundation and hope for next season.

Now we just need the fullbacks to blend with Delaney and Macca
