O'Connor Signs Deal
O'Connor Signs Deal
Friday, 2nd Jul 2010 11:39

Left-back Shane O’Connor has put pen to paper on the new contract which was offered to him at the end of last season. The former Liverpool academy player’s new deal is aimed at keeping him at Portman Road until 2012

The 20-year-old broke into the side late last season having joined the Blues after a trial, signing an initial one-year contract.

Cork-born O’Connor said: “Obviously I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to stay at the club.

“The deal was agreed a while back, but it’s good to put my signature on the contract, get that out of the way and now I’m looking forward to helping the team have a good season.

“I really enjoyed last year and was pleased with the progress I made. Now I’ve got to look to build on that this year."

O'Connor made 11 starts and two sub appearances and captained the reserves during the 2009/10 season in which he also suffered from a knee ligament injury.

Good news, a great prospect for team building, now lets get into the market and find other good young players, they don't need to cost a fortune!

Hopefully the fact he lost his deal with Liverpool will keep him focussed.

Nice one Shane, keep working hard and build on last season-long way to go to being a complete player but is by far the best left back we have on our books.

... and STILL some people find a reason to moan? We all know last season was a disappointment, but Shane was a real plus point. Signed by ROY on a free transfer, he has now committed his future to the club. This is a GOOD news story, yet we are faced with snide remarks such as 'why are we signing players now ? surely we should be selling'. Clearly the author of this post is NOT an Ipswich fan. We have not signed him - he has simply signed a new contract. He played last year and if you were a Town fan you would surely know that?

Good news at last.

BTW. Russell's been shown the door at budgies. Why not have a go with him?

Great news. O'Connor looks good to me and I hope we can give him a run in the side rather than keep changing things. I seem to remember last year he was dropped after a good match day performance due to how players looked in training. Let's show confidence in Shane and develop him into a top player for us.

He actually wasn't signed by Roy, Jim Magilton signed him - though thats by the by. I wish everybody would stop moaning and get behind the manager and the team. Does anyone actually think Roy Keane wants to fail? Does anyone actually think that he isn't trying to sign new players? Get behind him and the team and stop bleating. Everyone.

No, Roy Keane signed him ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/i/ipswich_town/8158694.stm).

No manager wants to fail though, but people can validly question whether he is the right man to remould the team into a promotion side when he doesn't seem to have the scouting network or contacts to identify players and bring them to the club. I hope he does succeed in bringing the right players in soon, as we want to avoid last season's situation of late signings meaning weeks of "bedding in".

Great news - he showed a lot of promise in an otherwise barren season!

The clincher was when Keane rang him and sang "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You"

Good news indeed - showed his potential last season. Young, strong and with some pace - just what we need.
