Delaney Out for Three Months Saturday, 17th Jul 2010 20:48
Town central defender Damien Delaney will be out of action for three months after suffering a serious thigh injury in training on Friday. The Irishman has undergone two operations for what initially appeared to be a dead leg.
Manager Roy Keane says Delaney continued training and the seriousness of the situation was only realised at the end of the session: ”Damien picked up a dead leg in training on Friday, had an operation on Friday afternoon and had another operation today. It’s a serious injury, he’ll probably be out for three months.
“He’s a very lucky boy, it’s a really nasty injury. He was very lucky our medical care got him to hospital and they operated very quickly and we believe the surgery went very well. But it’s a big blow for us.”
Keane says the Blues suffered no further injury problems in the PSV match, which he felt was a useful run-out: “In terms of a fitness exercise, we’ve done a lot of running. It was good, I really enjoyed it. We’ve a long way to go before we can match a team like PSV. It was a very good workout.”
Town’s only other injury problem at present is Colin Healy, who missed the trip with a hamstring problem. Skipper Jon Walters is not expected to be out ill for too much longer.

Sounds like it could have been a lot more serious. Hope he makes a full recovery. On the bright side, it gives Tommy Smith a chance to build on what was a very promising World Cup - and he will still give us the necessary balance as he will take DD's left-sided slot.

Serious blow for us, wish DL the best recovery. Lets hope Tommy Smith can come in a fill the big hole in our defence, sorry but Alex Bruce is not the answer, he will probably be injured soon himself anyway!

At least it's happened mid-pre-season, so that gives Tommy a chance to settle in before the season starts. Also wonder if we could get an experienced left sided backup in on a 3 month loan too.

Very disappointing and feel very sorry for him. Of course the club must now invest in a quality centre half. Smith may be okay, but with Bruce possibly leaving, we will be short of cover.

Is Jay DeMerit still available on a free?...he'd be a quality signing.

Thats a big blow as his partnership with McAuley coincided with our improved results last year. A big chance for Tommy Smith though

just check out the quality signings by Middlesboro' our first opponents, we could be in trouble from the start... lets hope they don't gel as a team from the off!

Big blow about Delaney. So, it looks like we will have a back four of O'Connor-Smith-McAuley-Peters going into the Championship campaign. I am worried that that inexperienced defence will concede goals and we just won't have the fire-power at the other end to score enough. We badly need some signings if we are to avoid a relegation scrap in 2010/11.

Bad blow so close to start of the season as Damien was one of the better performers last season,I wouldnt worry about Boro to be honest as buying in so much from Scotland will prove a very bad move for Strachan off to watch Boro on Weds against bottom of table Bray and to be honest he has taken a massive expensive gamble thinking thay will do well in the championship.I give them a finish no higher than top ten this season.

Outside the top ten that is.

i watched the game tonight on iraqgoals Alex bruce played in delaneys spot for this game atleast...he werent to hot lol. Garvan was utter Kak as usual still moping around in the middle like a 5 year old sucking his thumb only coming to life when someone has the ball to pass to him as he watches players walk past him towards our goal laughing at him. but he didnt even have his pass with him tonight. Conner whickham looked ok had a coupe of little chances but we were being overrun in the first half to be honest so he didnt have a great deal. stead didnt look like he knew what football was. Leadbitter had a good game and some great tackles! Priskin was finidng Conner well and played one great through ball in paticular in the first half. Lee martin done ok when he came on he got a few good crosses in then i think he moved into more of a stikers role Civelli was off the pace understanably when he came on but you could see in his positional awarness and what he was trying to do that he could be very nifty on the left wing when hes fully fit and confident. Jamie peters looked pretty good at right got skinned a couple of times but recovered well Shane o'conner looked very solid except for the goal we let in but i blame alex bruce for that mostly and shane was out of position in the middle covering but should have been marking the scorer closer

Holly crap! Were screwed.. Seriously I'm really starting to panic now. We can't score, have no creativiy & no pace in the side @ all. The only thing that we did have was a solid central defensive partnership.. Now that's in tatters .. Are we going to get religated? Is the scum going to do the double over us?.. Please I can't take any more..please please can we have aomething to cheer us all up...

Tommy Smith will play alongside McAuley until Delaney is fit, and if Smith shines, Delaney may have to compete to get back in - and so he should. A nasty injury this and a great blow to us and him. Full backs seem a concern... looks like the boy O'Connor & Peters - who by all accounts were poor yesterday. Have Sunderland got any Cork born 19 yr olds who play full back? Business will be done and the likes of Stead & Bruce will go - sombody will take them to fill out their numbers. We do need a few additions, that is veruy clear. Luca will have to play, let's hope he's ready. Maybe a month from the bench, build it up. I'm not a boo-boy, but a realistic doubter. Keeping Wickham now seems vital, unless we spend the £10m on 4 decent signings.

This is Smith's chance, should settle in easily and will come in with more experience now after the world cup. Coyb!

bruce wont go now, thankfully....not saying he will fill the whole, i would guess smithy will but with bruce as the main centre back sub

A real shame as McAuley/Delaney looked a good partnership. I would still let Bruce go (Did you see him against PSV?) and look for a new Centre Half to backup MCauley/Smith. Maybe even a Premier league load signing would do it?

With Eastman netting a hat-trick maybe it is time he stepped up to the plate?
