Finnan Linked Again Tuesday, 20th Jul 2010 09:34
Free agent full-back Steve Finnan is again being linked with the Blues. The Irishman is out of contract having left Portsmouth at the end of the season and was first mentioned in connection with the Blues last week.
The 34-year-old right-back played alongside Town manager Roy Keane while winning 52 Republic of Ireland caps and scoring two goals.
Finnan, who was born in Ireland but moved to Chelmsford as a youngster, played youth football with Wimbledon but started his senior career with non-league Welling, before moving on to Birmingham, Notts County, Fulham, Liverpool, Espanyol and finally Portsmouth.

His quality is undoubted, the question is at 34 what is his desire to play the game like? I'd go for him if we can afford the wages.

Would be a much needed good signing to add undoubted experience to a worryingly young defence we have at the moment

Dont forget he had a marvelous International Career. 50 Caps for Rep of Ireland. Played brilliantly in 2002 World Cup and has also been voted on a few Premier League Select teams at RB. He would be an amazing signing. He still has the pace and fitness to compete at this level. Get him now!!!

With the amount of Irish in the team. Shall we have a 3rd Away Kit. A GREEN one.

Yeah, very good player to be linked at this level, assuming his legs haven't gone. The only question has to be his wages in a time when we are desperately trying to reduce the wage bill. A player who had played in the Prem for most of his career is going to be on far far higher than what we can afford. And weren't wages one if the reasons to defend the decision to sell D Wright.

Great signing in the short term, assuming we can afford him of course. Also a fantastic role-model for Peters and O'Connor - having someone like him to learn from will really help their game develop.

@ Liverpool_blu With the amount of Irish in the team. Shall we have a 3rd Away Kit. A GREEN one. Our all-Irish starting 11 looks ok at the back but don't see them getting too many goals! Murphy Finnan | McAuley | Delaney | O'Connor Garvan | Healy | Quinn | Hourihane Murray | Walters Personally I don't care where they come from as long as they add something to the team.

As Tractorog suggests the stumbling block could be his wage demands and I bet other clubs would be interested as well. Still if he does sign it will be just what we need to give us all a boost.

Finnan always gets lots of assists too, would be good to see some quality crosses coming in from the right for Wickham to tuck away

I think he'd be a rubbish signing for Ipswich....... There, there's your negativity...lol I'm joking obviously, If we get a player of his standard then that proves to other possible signings that we are serious this season and hopefully that will get them to come and join the likes of him. Would also be good for us lot on here to see a bit of action in the transfer market. Not that i was losing faith or anything but even the most die hard fan such as myself was begining to wonder if Keano had forgotten that the window was open....ok i know we haven't signed him or anyone yet but it's a step in the right direction in my thoughts and good to see that the wheels are still turning..

I said it when he was released and again ,sign him up quick hes just the type of guy we need to have around the place and hes free so that should be some compensation if his wages are a little expensive though I think he will be glad to come to a club that will actually pay him for his efforts unlike Pompey and keep Owen.

Please be True. Could make a big impact at the back and help in the development of Ms's Smith, Eastman and Co.

agreed will be a solid signing, especially if he is prepared to take a 12 month contract.
mightytown added 14:18 - Jul 20
a great signing if we could get him. imagine if we could bring i an hart at left back too. we'd then have two vastly experienced fullbacks to compliment our other two young fullbacks in peters and o'connor. if we can then add another centre back as cover for delaney then we'd be looking pretty good. all thats left is that elusive qalit striker! coyb!
